Depends on what you are doing.

If you are hiking off the beaten path, then land mines and poisonous snakes are a bigger concern than most places.

If you have a serious medical emergency you may have to be sent to Bangkok for treatment. This delay could, occassionally, be a problem.

If you are out at 3AM staggering back to your hotel alone, well hopefully you are not carrying all of your money and credit cards with you. This is foolish behavior anywhere in the world.

There is some corruption where you might be hit up for cash by police or army. If so $2-$5 is enough. Don't get crazy and start giving away twenties.

With normal care and caution, Cambodia is a reasonable place to visit. On the bus from Sihanoukville to Phnom Penh, I sat next to a 24 y.o. Irish woman who was traveling alone. She said she had a great time and people were very nice to her. She was going to Vietnam next. Being courteous, polite and keeping a low profile are good ideas when visiting foreign countries.

Cambodia is not for everyone. The Club Med tourist may be disturbed by the extreme proverty, the crippled beggars, the terrible displays at Toul Seng and the killing fields and having to ride on the back of a 125cc motorbike over pot holed streets for transportation.

Also disturbing is the change in expression in the urchins selling things on the beach. They look so cute when approaching and asking you to buy. When they realize you aren't going to buy anything, their expressions are far from cute and even scary sometimes. If you do buy, wait until you are ready to leave anyway. You are likely to mobbed by other vendors.

While I would never give money to the bums in the USA, I gave more to beggars in Cambodia than I spent on hotels. Not really that generous considering the price of hotels there. The people, especially the crippled, really have almost no opportunity. I also gave some left over food to a street urchin who was watching me eat. He stuffed the left-overs into his and hs brother's mouth fast while the restaurant owner scowled. It was disturbing for me.

Well, I go to Thailand and Cambodia every six months or so for the last 3 years and I have never found anything dangerous so far. Both the countries are very much tourist friendly and people are very friendly. I could go alone any where in these 2 countries even after mid night.

Only Dangerous to the foolhardy.

I have made two trips to Cambodia and I found it very enlightening. The people are very friendly.

Yes there is extreme poverty. and yes there is crime for the unwary tourist to run afoul of. but politeness, courtesy, and a HUGE dose of common sense will go far.
If you have ever been to the border towns along the Mexican border with the US you will know some of what to watch for insofar as Tourists traps and Child Beggars.
