Life is a chemical reaction that began billions of years ago and has propagated by various forms of fission and fusion.
There is no one life form. There is only life.
If I have a 10L bucket and start an oscillating chemical reaction, and at the moment of equilibrium, pour 5L of it into another bucket, then top both buckets up, which one is the original reaction? Or are they both the same as the point of origin? Does it matter that a few impurities may have gone into one bucket or the other? Would that still not all be part of the same chemical reaction? How many divisions and buckets would you need before you could say that this bucket was not part of the original reaction, and therefore the same as all the other buckets?

Essence of Life
Poem by Siddartha Pamulaparty
For You I shall Live,
For You I shall die,
All those tough things
For You I will try.
For You I shall breath,
For You I will stop,
And all my desires
For You I will drop.
For You I shall eat,
For You I will not,
To the new qualities of life
For You I will sought.
For You I shall sleep,
For You I will dream,
When I'm all alone
For You I will scream.
For You I shall sing,
For You I will talk,
Till the ends of the world
For You I will walk.
For You I will love,
For You I will fight,
The Divine candle of hope
For You I shall light.
For You I shall shrink,
For You I shall grow,
The Essence of my life
For You I shall know.

The essence of life is to become.
Or if you believe Hitchiker's, then it is 42.

I would say reproduction, however some things reproduce that we don't consider alive. Its one of those things that is hard to define but you know it when you see it.
