Not believing there are any to be had is one thing. Some churches teach they are not for today, but there is no reason why they wouldnt be. Also, assuming there is a specific gift you will recieve (Like tongues for example) assuming its a sure thing, might hinder you from realizing other gifts you were given.

Hmmmm.... an inability to submit those gifts to His will could keep God from granting the gifts He has set aside for you. Imagine if you received a "power" (Gift) from heaven and weren't willing to use it the way God wanted you to, but instead were going to use it to serve your own desires? Yikes!

That sounds like an evil villain on a Saturday morning cartoon.

DAISYKRISTINA: Had a good answer, "not being faithful in the little things." He can't promote us for bigger callings when we can't even handle the little ones He has placed before us.

I think the biggest hindrance is pride. We think we can handle everything ourselves, and that we are in control. That's when we are furthest from God. Sometimes bad things happen to us, we are rendered helpless and realise that we really do need God, that He's the Boss and Creator of everything. False pride can be just as bad, that is when we say we're not important enough for God to bother with us, and don't ask his help.

Jesus told his disciples that before they could heal anyone they had to do a certain thing.

Then later, Jesus told us that before we could be forgiven by God we had to do a certain thing.

Do you remember what that was?

"Forgive others. If you do not forgive others, then your father in Heaven will not forgive you."

If you hold a "grudge" it will hinder you from receiving the Gifts of the Spirit. -- It is as simple as that

- Not working on developing the tiny beginnings of the ones we do have.

- Too much noise and distraction in our lives.

- Too much sin (or we're living in such a way that God doesn't think we can be responsible for them yet).

Just some off the top of my head.
