When my son was 2, I had the same problem. What I would do is this: I used to put him to sleep with the pacifier, wait about 5 minutes after he was in a DEEP sleep, and remove the pacifier from the crib. Once it got to the point that he only needed it to fall asleep, I let him have it around the house for ONE DAY. Of course, as kids invariably do, he left it lying around somewhere. Now here's the sneaky part: I picked it up, tossed it in the garbage, and when he asked later where it was I told him he lost it and I had no other ones. He whined a little the first night without it, but after that it was smooooth sailing. I know it sounds like a dirty trick, but being 2 1/2 at the time I did it he was none the wiser and it brought a quick ending to the pacifier craze. :-)

I am having the same problem. My son is 2 1/2 and only takes it at bedtime. He goes to daycare and naps there without it. I have tried cold turkey but he was miserable. I tried at Christmas to have him leave it for Santa to take to another child but that did not work either. So, I guess if he does not give it up willingly by 3 we will just have to go cold turkey again. Best of Luck to you!

Take it away and don't give it back. Also do not give into the temeper tantrums! Children need to learn how to comfort themselves without the help of a pacifier.

Here are some links to advice I found:
http://parentcenter.babycenter.com/comments/preschooler/pdevelopment/69368
http://www.childrensmemorial.org/experts/default.asp?expertID=17 (scroll down to find the answers-- it is there)
http://www.medhelp.org/forums/Maternal/messages/41118.html
Look into how safe this option is-- you know the stuff people use on their fingernails so they will stop biting them? If it is safe to put on the nipple, then try that-- it will taste so bad your little girl will give up the pacifier on her own.

Your 2 yr old, why havn't you taken it away sooner?? We took my daugthers away after her 1st b-day. We picked all the pacifiers up when she wasn't looking. When she would go look for one, we would just say they were lost. It was hard the first couple of nights but she was fine, she didn't die from not having one.

Let her keep the dummy(Pacifier)she will give it up in time,As she only has it to sleep with,If you take it from her she might start to suck her thumb,And that is a far more difficult habit to break.

Have a "Bye-Bye Binkey" Party! Show her that she's a Big Girl now and doesn't need it any more.
Make it fun for her to get rid of it, as it will only cause her to have buck teeth, if she keeps using it.

Why? If you don't want her to have it, why did you give it to her in the first place? People should not give their children a pacifier of any sort, it's intended to pacify the child, and then take them away, unless you want an insecure child.
