I'm Catholic but here is my two cents. The reason is rooted in good sense.

Muslims (and Jews) view certain meats as being inherently unclean. This is a traditional belief so the original reasons sometimes don't always hold up today with the modern slaughter techniques in Western countries. Pigs lived in filthy conditions, wallowing in and eating their own and each other's excrement and were therefore more succeptible than other livestock to parasites. A group of pigs living in a mud hole is going to spread all their diseases and parasites to each other more effectively than a group of goats on a mountain or cows in a field.
Muslims also don't eat other animals that live and feed in excrement such as shrimp and lobster.

This is not contradicted by the fact that other meats might contain parasites. It's simply that those meats have a smaller likelihood of making you sick than pork. The odds are better in not eating pork.

There is probably also another element to the tradition. Societies that sometimes live in mountainous regions or are nomadic and will use animals that survive in those regions. I don't see pigs as good nomadic animals, they aren't built for distance and their hooves aren't good for sand or mountains. Cow are better walkers. Goats and sheep can live in the mountains.

Non-Muslims also have beliefs about what not to eat based on tradition rather than reality. Many won't eat perfectly good meat that's plenitiful that could be raised in clean circumstances such as osterich, emu, buffalo, dog, cat, rat, reptiles, amphibians, insects, worms, etc. A seller of those meats would be fighting thousands of years of tradition.

Pig's bodies contain many toxins, worms and latent diseases. Although some of these infestations are harbored in other animals, modern veterinarians say that pigs are far more predisposed to these illnesses than other animals. This could be because pigs like to scavenge and will eat any kind of food, including dead insects, worms, rotting carcasses, excreta (including their own), garbage, and other pigs. The Jews and Christians are also forbidden from eating pork. Here is a quote from the Old Testament to that effect: "And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase
In folklore terms, eating the meat of the pig is said to contribute to lack of morality and shame, plus greed for wealth, laziness, indulgence, dirtiness and gluttony. We insult a person by calling him or her a "Pig" when they demonstrate these characteristics

Is Pork Forbidden to Muslims Only?

The Jews and Christians are also forbidden from eating pork. Here is a quote from the Old Testament to that effect: "And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you: ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcase." Deuteronomy 14:8

Many Christians believe that this verse was directed only at the Jews. But Jesus himself says during the Sermon on the Mount; "Think not that I am come to destroy the Law, or the Prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfill." Some Christians say that, after a vision by St. Peter, God cleansed all animals and made them fit and lawful for human consumption. If ALL animals are cleansed by Peter's vision, this includes dogs, cats, vultures, and rats.

Many Far Eastern traditions also discourage the eating of pork. The 3,000 year old Confucian Book of Rites says, "Agentleman does not eat the flesh of pigs and dogs."

Bad effects of pork consumption

Pig's bodies contain many toxins, worms and latent diseases. Although some of these infestations are harbored in other animals, modern veterinarians say that pigs are far more predisposed to these illnesses than other animals. This could be because pigs like to scavenge and will eat any kind of food, including dead insects, worms, rotting carcasses, excreta (including their own), garbage, and other pigs.

Influenza (flu) is one of the most famous illnesses which pigs share with humans. This illness is harbored in the lungs of pigs during the summer months and tends to affect pigs and humans in the cooler months. Sausage contains bits of pigs' lungs, so those who eat pork sausage tend to suffer more during epidemics of influenza. Pig meat contains excessive quantities of histamine and imidazole compounds, which can lead to itching and inflammation; growth hormone, which promotes inflammation and growth; sulphur-containing mesenchymal mucus, which leads to swelling and deposits of mucus in tendons and cartilage, resulting in arthritis, rheumatism, etc.

Every creature was created by Allah for a purpose. The Prophet always encouraged being kind to animals. Although we should not eat the meat of the pig, it doesn't mean that we should hate pigs. We should show them the same kindness as any other animal, and not abuse or torture them.

peace.

The fact that consumption of pork is prohibited in Islam is well known. The following points explain various aspects of this prohibition:

1. Pork prohibited in the Qur’an:

The Qur’an prohibits the consumption of pork in no less than 4 different places. It’s prohibited in 2:173, 5:3, 6:145 and 16:115. For instance, Allah says: “Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood, the flesh of swine, and that on which hath been invoked a name other than that of Allah.” (Al-Ma’idah: 3)

The above verses of the Glorious Qur’an are sufficient to satisfy a Muslim as to why pork is forbidden.

2. Pork prohibited in the Bible:

Addressing the Christian who is likely to be convinced by his religious scriptures, the Bible prohibits the consumption of pork, in the book of Leviticus: “…and the swine, as he divideth the hoof, and be cloven footed, yet he cheweth not the cud; he is unclean to you. Of their flesh shall ye not eat, and their carcass shall ye not touch, they are unclean to you.” (Leviticus chapter 11 verse 7 and 8)

Pork is also prohibited in the book of Deuteronomy: “And the swine, because it divideth the hoof, yet cheweth not the cud, it is unclean unto you. Ye shall not eat of their flesh, nor touch their dead carcass.” (Deuteronomy chapter 14 verse 8)

A similar prohibition is repeated in the book of Isaiah chapter 65 verse 2-5.

3. Consumption of pork causes several diseases:

The other non-Muslims and atheists will agree only if convinced through reason, logic and science. Eating of pork can cause no less than seventy different types of diseases.

A person can have various helminthes, like roundworm, pinworm, hookworm, etc. One of the most dangerous is Taenia Solium, which in a layman’s terminology is called tapeworm. It harbors in the intestine and is very long. Its ova, i.e. eggs, enter the blood stream and can reach almost all the organs of the body. If it enters the brain it can cause memory loss. If it enters the heart it can cause heart attack and if it enters the eye it can cause blindness. If it enters the liver it can cause liver damage. It can damage almost all the organs of the body.

Another dangerous helminthes is Taenia Trichuriasis. A common misconception about pork is that if it is cooked well, these ova die. In a research project undertaken in America, it was found that out of twenty-four people suffering from Taenia tichurasis, twenty two had cooked the pork very well. This indicates that the ovas present in the pork do not die under normal cooking temperature.

4. Pork has fat building material:

Pork has very little muscle building material and contains excess of fat. This fat gets deposited in the vessels and can cause hypertension and heart attack.

5. The pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth:

The pig is one of the filthiest animals on earth. It lives and thrives on muck, filth and dirt. In the villages they don’t have modern toilets and the villagers excrete in the open air. Very often excreta are cleared by pigs.

Some may argue that in advanced countries like Australia, pigs are bred in very clean and hygienic conditions. Even in these hygienic conditions the pigs are kept together in sties. No matter how hard you try to keep them clean they are filthy by nature. They eat and enjoy their own as well as their neighbor’s excreta. ”

Pork does not contain any more worms or virsuses than any othe rmeats.
If a cow becomes infected with the beef is just as infected as pork.
It's just a bilical myth that eating pork is forbidden. The bible (and jewish people follow this reasoning also) states that yuo should not eat animals with cloven hoves (pigs have spit or cloven hoves) that's the only reason many people don't eat pork, but pork cooked, smoked, or salted is as clean as any animal.
any other animal eaten uncook is just as dangerious to eat.
Cooking, salting or smoking pork kills the bacteria or parisites in the meat making it safe , as safe as any meat.
Muslims do no eat pork as they are in reality of jewish heritage and follow the jews in this custom as they do in claiming abraham, and others in the jewsih religon as their own.

Do you really think goats can not eat the same thing as do pigs when they munch on grass pigs are deficating on all day. cows also.
The most common meat among all religions or peoples eaten is the chicken and chickens eat everything form dead humans to fecies from any animal., Chickens will follow pigs/cows around and eat their droppings so the reasons for not eating pork for muslims , jews, and some christians are silly 1000 year old beleifs of which they still fight over.

Also muslims will eat beacon and saugauges if there are only a few of them around (in america anyway ). And I have had aan indian hindu tell me he wishes his parents would hurry up and go back to India so he could have a dam hamberger in peace.

Why when it comes to not eating pork, people only assume it is for Muslims only? Jews as well as Christians are forbidden to eat it as well. You guys should read your books! To answer your question, it is a filthy animal. It eats bad things. Carries many germs. Many researches recently done and results are the same.

All meats contain microbial organisms that require you to cook the food before eating it. Both Jews and Muslims define the "pig" as being an "unclean" animal based on passages in their respective religious texts and are forbidden to eat it.

Pork (and pig in general) is one of the cleaner better meats to eat.

The main reason jews and muslims don't eat pork is that there is a passage in their scriptures where the devil goes into the body of a pig and possesses it.

It was a mythical story and a one-time event, but evidently they see all pigs as tainted by the devil or something.

No matter, more pork for us!

I think in the old days pork was kind of nasty. Now it's ok, but because Islam is in dire need of a reformation, they are still following 500 year old beliefs and practices. The same could be said for Orthodox Jews as well.

If that's what they want to do fine with me.
