I'm getting my first car soon, but have no insurance. Do I need to buy insurance before buying the car, and if so, how? If not, how long of a grace period do I have to get insurance after getting the car? I live in florida, and can't find the info I need on it. Thx much!

you need to buy insurance as soon as you get your car, I mean you buy and you go and get insurance, if no you cannot move your car from the dealer, the best one for me in Horace Mann.

There is no grace period. You can't drive without insurance. Some will tell you that you have 30 days, but that's based on some state rules that used to state "When trading one car for a new one at the dealer, your current insurance on your trade in will cover your new car until you have contacted the insurance agent, or 30 days."

Since most states have dropped that provision now, with communication so much better, and it wouldn't apply to you anyway, contact an agent now. Tell him you are looking to buy and car, and give him your personal information so he can set it up for you. Make the down payment he will recommend. When you buy a car, call your agent with the information from the car. You're now covered. Drive directly to his office and pick up your cards. One goes with the title to change it into your name, one stays with the vehicle in the glove box to be shown on demand to any peace officer who asks to see it.

Go onto insurance sites and get quotes. Then you can buy online if you want. Or you can go to an agent in person or call and buy over the phone. I believe you're supposed to get the insurance before you have the car in your name, but I'm not sure of the specific rules for FL. Have you tried the secretary of state's website to find this information?

You get the car first, then have some one take you to the DMV and get it registered and the license plates. Then while there, get a 10 permit for insurance. Then you can drive yourself to the insurance comp. and get the insurance. You will need the title of the car for the DMV and Ins. com. Good luck. Drive with care.
