If it is a dining table 6 inches, the cloth should not rest on your lap when your seated. on other tables it is just a mater of taste. I personally think it looks better if they go to the floor.

Well as a matter of fact I just got done measuring my table's in my house for new tablecloth's just a couple of days ago.... I think its appropriate to have them go to the floor,, but its your house and there are no rules about having them hanging over at just the exact way of society!! But, dont forget to multiply all the sides, times 4 and add all of your sides together..... smile!!!!

Depends on table, its uses, and your desire.

A minimum of 4" keeps it in place most of the time.
Standard rule is no longer than the top of seats, but some people find this still too long if children are around.
Also decorative table covers can also go as long as floor length for special events (seating at a wedding or such) or tables for serving or display.

It should be 6 inches all around. This is the right positioning for it to look elegant and fitted properly. This is if the tablecloth is an overlay. If it is an underlay, then it is 12 inches.

1)For a Rectangle table:

Measure the width and length of your table, then subtract those numbers from the width and length of the tablecloth and then divide by 2.

2)For a Round table:

Measure your table at its widest, then subtract from the tablecloth diameter and then divide by 2.

Example: Your table is a 60" round. The tablecloth is a 90" round.
90"-60"=30" 30" divided by 2=15" 15" the drop around the table!
