We have an old home (1940) that has the original plaster walls. We would like to hang picture frames and some small shelves that would hold little nick-knacks, a model sailboat, etc. I have been reluctant to do it up to this point because I do not want to crack the plaster, damage the walls, be left with a ever-growning crack and a shelf or frame that is not securely in the wall. Any suggestions from others who have dealt with similar situations?
THANKS!

Pre drill with a masonry drill bit and insert wall anchors. There are many kinds of anchors for different uses. Go to the Home depot or Lowes and see what they have available. Use a laser level and paper templates to place on the wall before you make any modifications.
Good Luck!!!

Make sure you find the studs. Especially if it's something heavy. Nail directly into the stud, and hang from there. As long as you have the stud behind it then you'll be fine. If no stud it'll just pull right out.

Other than that... there are these little metal toggle bolts. If you're hanging something that's not too heavy and you want it somewhere where there's no stud behind it. You use these. But I'd seriously only hang on the stud so you know you won't mess up the walls.

Make a small X with masking tape on the spot you want to hang the picture. Place the nail directly in the middle of the X. This should hold most lighter weight pictures. Just use regular masking or painter's tape- nothing with super high adhesive or you may pull a little of the wall's finish off if you ever decide to move the picture.

Ordinary drywall cans safety hold a lightweight artwork hung from a nail; heavier objects require different anchors. Get more tips at the source below

predrill the holes and use anchors. I don't suggest nails because should you accidently miss etc then there will more damage then you want.

As long as you pre-drill you should be ok. Make sure to use the studs.
