I live in Canada and have never heard this term before, I find it kind of funny. (no offence) I was just wondering what it all means and how accurate it is, where it came from and why it's not globally used in the English language.

1 stone = 14 pounds = 6.350 kilograms
The stone is just one of the Old English system of measurments that is still in use despite the adoption of the metric system.

Er, Canada is a protectorate of the United Kingdom? Have you got something you'd like to share?

It's used occasionally on the East coast, but it's almost wholly a British term. There are 14 pounds to a stone. Now, with the ease of metric's base 10, try working in base 14 for a while!

In a stone, there are 14 pounds. It's a measurement of imperial weight (which is what people used to use up until about 25 years ago - it's what my Mum used to use!)....

Check this page out for more info.. The info on pounds and stones are near the middle..

Good luck!

It's used in England, and since Canada is protectorate of the United Kingdom, they might also use the term. It's generally used to describe a person's weight - I think there are about 20 pounds to a stone, but I'm not sure.
