None of the service in the startup are essential. They are all part of software you have added, not part of Windows. So your computer will run without any of them. The individual programs will also run without the startup (99% of the time). They just may take a second or two longer to start up.

If you look at the file name and directory, you can usually guess which program they go to. Unless it is your virus scanner, you can disable them. If you have a issue with the program afterwards, you simply go back and recheck the item to turn it back on.

You should be care full of playing with these settings if you do not understand them. But without a listing what what services and programs are booting up at start time, it would be hard to say. I would suggest you leave the services alone, and only disable the programs at start up only if you know what they are!!! You can google around for a list of what the services are and if yo need them, but by default, you should be okay. To help speed up your computer, uninstall any software which you don't use (anything you haven't opened in the last 6 months is usually a guaranteed program to remove). De-frag the hard drive. Allot of people suggest cleaning/defraging the registry but this is a common myth. The registry itself is actually not a very big file, and it is not something that is searched for a value, the program will know exactly where to find the values it needs.

Under the startup tab in msconfig windows will run without all of the items. You however need to keep all of the programs associated with your antivirus, spyware, or firewall programs checked and running at startup.

For the services you don't want to use msconfig . Instead use services.msc

This won't actually speed up your computer, despite what people tell you. If you don't know what to remove, then stay out of msconfig. You can speed up your computer by adding more RAM; doing a Disk Cleanup; by defragging your hard disk; by uninstalling programs and games you no longer play or use and by keeping ad-ware and spyware off the computer. Remove cookies and internet temporary files and cleaning history while on the internet. Don't keep email longer than 1 month, and not that long if you get a lot of it. All of these things add to the load on the hard drive.

None of the start up items in the start up tab are needed for your system to run.
You may want your virus scanner and firewall programs to start.
You can un check them all, if there is something missing you can go back in and check it to start on next startup.

Only the ones, which will not affect the functioning of Windows, are listed there. You can safely disable all of them. But I will recommend you to keep the security ones and remove the rest.

Here is a good roundup for windows services that explain what they are for and whether or not you can safely disable them.

all programs under the boot and system are essential and must remain checked unless you really know what you are doing.
