It took me a while to get used to LA. Many things suck about it.

First: you must drive everywhere, but there is horrible traffic and when you get to your destination there is no parking. Took me about a year to figure out the traffic patterns and best streets to take at which times. So if you're here on vacation, you are out of luck. You will sit in traffic. Maybe tell the people at your hotel where you are going and ask their advice for the best route.

You might get lost and accidentally end up in the ghetto. Happened to me a couple of times.

It's REALLY spread out. Unlike any other city I've been to. People always ask me where the touristy stuff is. But it's all over!

But then there's the good:

Good weather (although today it snowed in Malibu! weird!!) And it's DRY. I hate humidity more than anything. Though I've heard outside complain about this . . .

Lots to do. A great varity of restaurants. Laker games, USC football!! Seriously come in the fall and try to see a game. Tons of museums. The Getty is fantastic, but also try the Huntington Library (actually not in the city, but near), the Hammer.

Shopping: Rodeo Drive. And there are lots of free parking structures in Beverly Hills!

Also, I'm begining to love that's it's spread out. So much to explore. From Griffith Park to Santa Monica! Get a Thomas Guide and you're set! (A Thomas Guide is one book, but it contains a very easy-to-use map of all of LA!)

Celebrities: love 'em or hate 'em, you can't deny they're fun. I love seeing famous people around and hearing about their exploits. Like I knew David Beckham was coming to LA before any of you people because I know someone who knows a realtor who is showing Victoria houses. It's silly stuff, but it's fun to gossip!

I live in Long Beach, a suburb 30 miles outside of LA.
There are gangs, but if you avoid South Central, Watts and Compton it's relatively safe for a big city. You must have a car when you visit and traffic on the freeways can be horrible any time of the day or night. Do what the tourists do and visit the newly remodeled Griffith Observatory at night to get a beautiful view of the city lights. Both of the Getty Museums are nice as is the Museum of Latin American Art in Long Beach. Drive around the Hollywood Hills and check out Greystone Castle. Take a drive along Mulholland. Eat at Canter's Deli and check out some bands at the various clubs along the Strip. Pick up an LA Weekly and they will have club locations and the line ups. Go visit the Huntington Gardens in Pasadena. It's a huge area and there is a lot to see. LA is not cheap and driving isn't for the wimpy. Parking is a problem in most places. Do not move here if you don't have a job because you will burn through your savings quick on rent ,food and gas.

It all depends on what part of LA you're in. The city of LA is huge. The county is even larger.
I live in the San Fernando valley. There certainly isn't a gang issue by my house, but in South central, yeah, there is.
I think people don't realize how huge the city is. There are run down places and really nice ones.
Honestly, I don't see LA as a tourist destination. I'm not all that sure what people want to do here, other than go to amusement parks.
Hollywood isn't all that great. It's really dirty.

From what I see from programs on TV about Los Angeles,
each neighbourhood has it's gang mainly fulled by drugs and unemployment, also there are plenty of turf wars between rival gangs and drive-by shootings.
To travel from place to place you have to use a car for it is not a safe city by any means to get around. so if you do decide to go to this city of dreams ( more like a nightmare ) then start thinking about an armed escort for protection. and ensure that you have life insurance, good luck on your travels.

Los Angeles is Huge! It's also knwon as the City of Cities, as it's at least 70 miles across!
It depends what you are after in a city. The popular touristy bits are nice - Anaheim, Hollywood, Long beach, etc, but most of it is like a normal city - dirty, noisy, crime ridden.

It's shite.
It's full of stupid Americans, which doesn't help.
There's no city centre as such.
The atmosphere's dreadful.

Go to Santa Barbara, much better.
St Luis Obispo better still.

Avoid LA
