Christianity is an umbrella term for Catholics and Protestants. It is kind of like saying all bulldogs are dogs but not all dogs are bulldogs.

There is no difference between Catholics and Christians. Catholics are Christians, and were the first Christians. There is however a difference between Catholics and Protestants. The Catholic Church was founded by Jesus Christ and teaches the fullness of Christian truth. Protestant churchs are unauthorized manmade institutions which teach a mixture of Christian truth received from the Catholic Church, and new traditions of men developed through attempts at personal interpretation of the Bible. The Catholic Church represents the will of God, that His followers would be united in belief and united in worship. Denominationalism represents rejection of the will of God in that respect.

Catholics and Protestants do hold some central beliefs in common, such as the basic fact that Jesus is the Savior, and that we are saved by the grace of God, and not by anything we ourselves can do. However, Protestant churches have rejected many other beliefs of original Christianity. Exactly which beliefs have been rejected depends on which Protestant denomination you look at, since the differences between Protestant churches are often as great as the differences between Protestants and Catholics.

short answer: Nothing like Father K said, Catholics are the first Christians all branches of Protestantism can be traced back to Catholicism.

long answer when you use the word 'christian' I assume you mean Protestant Christians and there is a mighty many difference among the numerous denominations which form Protestantism.

A quick note on semantics - it is the difference between Catholics and Protestants, not Catholics and Christians. Catholics believe in Christ, therefore they are Christians.

My ex-Catholic boyfriend says that Protestants follow Christ, whereas Catholics focus more on God, Mary and the Holy Spirit. Protestants also reject entirely the dogma of the church - that man can only talk to God through a priest, that salvation comes through confession only, etc. - and all the pagan traditions of the church because they are inherently pagan. Not only do Catholics use incense and candles in their rituals, their movements are deosil - clockwise - and they tend to do things in threes - three swings of the censor, three circles of the chalice (which is a pagan tool), and I won't even get into how the saints parallel our pantheons. Protestants reject all that.

There are both Christians, Catholic is just one flavor of Christianity. That's like asking what's the difference between Wiccans and Pagans.

Catholics are Christians who consider Pope as the spiritual head of their church. Other christian denominations splintered away over time from Catholicism due to various differences such as Protestants splitting away questioning Pope authority or the question of his infallibility or some practices of the church under the Pope. Then the Protestants splintered into many other small denominations over time because of arguments over doctrinal issues and the process continues.

Catholics are also Christians. Besides that the question is to broad; with what denomination you want to compare Catholics: Orthodox (Greek, Russian, etc.), Maronite's, Anglicans, Protestants (with all their diversity). They are all Christians, you choose.

There are many differences, but the one big one is how is a person saved, and given eternal life. This was the main issue at the time of the protestnt reformation. Christians believe that Jesus is the Savior, and that we are saved by the grace of God through our faith, and not by any good work(s) that we do. Catholocism teaches that it is the Catholic Church that saves people and it is through their works. It comes through baptism, the sacraments, last rights, traditions, and giving to theCatholic church. The other differences are many, but this is the main one, and the one that makes Christians claim that Catholics are not really Christians even though they use the name of Christ.

Catholics consider themselves to be the largest Christian denomination in the world. With the exception of th orthodox churches, almost all christian denominations can trace their history back to the Catholic church.
