If a recruit gets to that point, it's typically because he has convinced himself that he "can't" go any further. One of the main points of boot camp is to help individuals overcome that issue. If a recruit "can't" do anymore pushups, then the Drill Instructor will typically have them hold the "up" position of the push-up. You'd be surprised to see how many recruits don't think they can do another push-up, but still continue on for another 50. If the Drill Instructor notices that the entire group that he is "training" is having issues, then he will typically switch over to flutter kicks or running in place. There is a method to all of their madness, and the bottom line is that the process is meant to break the recruit down from being a civilian and rebuild them into Marines. Some people call it "brain washing", but the reality is that all they are doing is instilling self-pride and belief. The model the Marine Corps uses is a tried and true method that has been observed and analysed by many Organizational Behavior specialists, and believe it or not, the structure of boot camp follows a model of change that is taught in most Organizational Behavior classes at major business schools, to include the Wharton School of Business at UPenn.

Refusal to train? More humiliation typically. This is what would happen - the recruit would be swarmed by all of the Drill Instructors and when they still refused, the rest of the platoon would be made to do what the recruit could not do. The platoon is only as strong as its weakest recruit. The platoon would later make sure that the recruit did not refuse again.
If they continue to refuse, they get marched to the company commander's office and get processed out.

He can do more push ups, or they swith to something else. You'd be surprised at how long you can push when you need to. If the recruit cries? They push. It doesn't really matter. We had a kid pee himself every morning and he was verbally humiliated and then got smoked for awhile. You just push through it. None of it matters in the end.

If a recruit just drops from fatige the corpsman will give him the Silver Bullet to check his core temp. If he cries he just needs to man up and stop crying.

Have to agree with Scott R it is used to push for the troop to push themselves mentally. Yea you can be exausted but you can over come just about anything if you want to. Had a incident when I was in basic during a barracks inspection. Got droped for pushups and my instructor forgot about me, was doing pushups everytime he told someone else to do them and was in pushup position for about a half hr. He never told me to get up so I just pushed my self, yea wanted to calaspe after while but just pushed myself til my instructor told me to get up. Was funny though cause he walked around and saw that I was down and was like Knight what the hell you doin. So I told him he never instructed me to get up.

1. to make you understand the discipline of doing an action when you are told to do it. 2. For hydration of course. You have to drink water the day before an event to be hydrated the day of an event. Once you feel the dry mouth and thirstyness coming on, you are already too late. That is why they make you drink before you go to sleep, so you are hydrated for the first part of the day.

AS long as you are still putting out the effort the Drill Instuctors will notice. If you just stop and give up it shows you don't have heart and they're going to mess you more and more.
