I always quickly apologize, but sometimes they hang up in mid-apology, which I don't understand. If someone apologizes for dialing MY number by mistake, I just say, "It's ok" or "No problem." What do YOU do?

I always apologize for the mistake. The people who hang up on you may have a number that is similar to a frequently dialed number and get lots of "wrong number" phone calls. Maybe they get tired of it & just hang up. My cell number is like that. I get calls for a local community center here all the time. They even went so far as to publish my phone number in an advertisement for an event they were having. From that I learned what their REAL number is and now when I have people calling for them I just give them the right number. It just seems common courtesy to me. We are all human. We all make mistakes. No sense makling someone feel bad about it.

Generally it's good manners to apologize for dialing a wrong number, however if the person on the other end hasn't learned any manners and hangs up it's not your fault. Civility and good manners seem to be at a premium nowadays. My parents actually taught us how to answer a phone and it wasn't yeah or what .

I would apologize, if you were to hang up this would more than likely irritate the person who received the phone call. It would just be considerate to apologize, that is something that we could all be a little more often.

Apologize. Even if they cut you off, you will protect your self. Some people get freaked out by phone calls. You don't want them calling the police on you or something like that. In addition, if they have caller id they might call you back and ask why you called them. So do the apology, make it brief and polite and then move on.

I apologize if I've called the wrong number, it is only common courtesy. I think the most bizarre thing that has ever happened to me in regards to wrong numbers is that someone dialed my number by accident and then had the gall to argue that he had called the right number!! I was flabbergasted - hel-LO...you called me! I think I know if someone lives here or not!

I do like you and apologize too, but my attitude is that I was in the right and if they hang up in the middle of my apology, I consider that I have just saved my breath for a rude jerk.
Don't stop being polite because of creeps with no manners.

Here is how the conversation goes with me typically:

A) May I speak to X?
B) Who?
A) X
B) I'm sorry you must have the wrong number because X doesn't live here.
A) Oh, really? Is this ***-**** (phone number)?
B) Yes, that's this phone number.
A) Sorry about that.
B) It's okay, no problem.

That is what usually happens from my experience. I don't hang up on other people because everyone makes a blunder now and again.

well, when i call the wrong number sometimes i hang up and sometimes i apologize. it all depends on how i feel. if someone calls my number wrong; some of them do the same thing; they either hang up or apologize and when the apologize i say that is okay.

I think it usually works the other way. I apologize saying "I'm sorry, I have the wrong number" and THEY hang up on ME.

I always apologize. if they hang up first, it makes no difference, because I did the right thing by attempting to be polite about it.
