Here are some random thoughts.

1) How often ARE you eating? You should be eating several small "meals" a day, not 3 big square meals then starving yourself in between.
2) Eat more fruits and vegetables when you do eat. They will fill you up faster than high-fat snacks.
3) As the other answerer says, exercise more. That way, you burn up a few calories and you have more "wiggle" room when you do eat.
4) Try to recognize when you're eating because you're actually hungry vs. eating because you're bored, upset, etc. If you get into eating for emotional reasons, you're in for a rough ride.

Good luck.

I have read the answers you have received so far. None of them really give you an answwer except maybe StuArtNJ. Hunger pains are very difficult, especially when you are trying to lose weight. The satisfaction that we need after we eat, is the hardest to fill. Research has not given us a good answer. So far, what I have heard is that we need to realize that every time we overeat (or eat just a little more than we know we should) our endocannabinoid system (new) tends to upregulate - then we need more then next time. So this means that you need to have mind over matter and plan to stop eating before you are completely satisfied. Then wait 30 min to see if you eventually get that satisfaction. If you have eaten a reasonable dinner, and you go to bed about 4 hours after eating, you should be able to fall asleep. If you are having trouble, try a cup of hot chocolate. Milk has a way of giving you some tryptophane that can turn to seritonin in the brain. Good luck. I know it is hard, because I struggle with the same thing.

Maybe you're just not eating the right kind of food. If you eat a lot of starches, like white bread and potatoes, you will feel heavier, like you mentioned, but you will continue to crave more food even after you eat it. The same is true for candy, chips, or really any food with processed sugars or white flour in it. Try to eat more protein-rich foods, like meats and nuts, which will curb your cravings while giving you that "full" feeling. Also, a trick that works for me is to chew a piece of sugar-free gum when I start to feel snacky. The flavor of the gum calms my cravings for something sweet, and the chewing motion sort of tricks my brain so I feel like I'm eating something. Another thing I was thinking was that maybe you aren't getting enough sleep. Whenever I'm tired, I seem to eat a lot more just to try to get some energy. Make sure you're getting at least 7 hours of sleep a night.

One thing you could do is keeping track of what you eat, your daily intake of calories should be around 2000 for females and 2500 for males (depending on age and metabolic rate etc, this is a rough average). Keeping a schedule of three meals a day and three snacks may help you to stop eating whenever you go into the kitchen.

If you find you're really eating too much, try to find something to distract yourself. I find that brushing my teeth helps.

Drinking water is also good, it makes your stomach feel full and 2 liters a day is healthy (and you can easily do it every time you walk into the kitchen...)

You're bored. Get out and do something....anything to get out of yourself. Chew a piece of gum instead of food.
