You say "who's calling?". Anyone who knows you would know that you aren't married, so it's probably a sales call. So, when they say "This is Barb from Condo Sales International," you can say "Sorry, but there is no one here by that name," and hang up.

No, in fact be careful with doing that! Depending on where you live it could cause complications. Many people do not realize this but some states still have common law marriage. For example: if you have lived together for x number of months, you have at least one account together (both names on bank, utility bill, credit card, phone, etc), and you or he refer to each other as husband and wife then you are married in the eyes of the state.

If you are engaged and the wedding is a couple of weeks away, then I would say, "This is soon to be Mrs X." However, if you are just living together and are not married for real or common law married, then I would just ask them who is calling and be truthful.

This annoys the hell out of me.
I'm single but way too often people assume I must be married by now (im 28) and refer to me as Mrs. Its not the title that annoys me its the assumption.
So when I answer the phone and someone says, "Hello, is that Mrs X?" I go "No" because that's not my name. Pedantic maybe, but it's a matter of principle.

If you have joint accounts in everything you can say yes and if you have been living together for more than 4 years you can say yes. If you do not have either of those say no and take a message if he is not home.

I say I am- we are engaged. UNLESS it is a bill collector....lol- then he is on his own. No really though- he doesnt take offense when people call me his wife already, so i dont mind responding to it.
Funny though- he will correct people if they say Mr. (...) using my last name. A man should have his own last name...lol, not his wifes in his opinion.

I always ask who is calling me before I answer that question - whether they address me correctly or not. If it's someone I need to speak to I ask them to correct their records and if not I don't bother getting that far into a conversation with them!
