I dont work in a shop at the moment, but i have in the past.

When people come to the till to pay for their goods and they count the money out and just put it on the counter instead of in your hand - I find this so annoying and rude, especially when the shop assistant is stood their with their hand out waiting for the money!!

Why do people do this? Have they got some problem with putting money into other peoples hands?

When they used to do it to me i would make sure that any change would be in small coins and i would just dump it on the counter like they did to me!!!

iv worked in retail for 3 years now, and i also work behind a bar, and i can tell you id rather serve an old drunk man than serve a female customer...especially in the sales!!! the drunken men are much more easy going, put the money in your hand, dont fuss about the change and often give you tips! lol

but your right, it is extremely rude... it really anoys me yes, i dont mind if a child does it...thats sifferent...or if its someone who is genuinly trying to count all the coins in there purse because they genuinly dont know if they can afford it and they hope to go d they can...

but those who have there money waiting nd when they just put it on the counter in front of me when i have my hand out...it makes me want to SCREAM!!!

there are various ways i get them back, like pulling the change back, counting it back in myhand (which gets them anoyed as its making out they cant count) or i sweep some of the money on to the floor, take ages picking it up, explaining that i have short nails and find it hard picking them up, then i miss picking up something like 20p...then ask them are they sure they gave me the right ammount as there isnt the right ammount here... which gets them all embarrassed...

or i take the change, put my hand out as though im waiting for them to take it, and when they do put their hand out put it on the counter, say thankyou and shout for the next customer to come around, then i avoid all eye contact as they hate it as they havent got the satisfaction of knowing that theyve shown you how annoyed they are...

sorry i sound really evil dont i? i dont do it all the time, but if a customer is being that way inclined, then with my best customer service i be as anoying as i can back... i mean...they started it! childish i know...but it gets me through the day you know...

if a customer is pleasent to me i will give them the best customer service i could possibly give, i always give them the benifit of the doubt though...but sometimes customers need a taste of their own medicine when they are being so obnoxious...

also... if they think there great and start being cocky with the things theyve bought, and look at me as though i couldnt possibly afford such a garment i wont hesitate and tell them i bought it my mum/grandma...

sorry about that!

i needed that outburst!!!

phew!!!

great question!!!

at the end of the day i rise above it, im at uni at the moment and know that i wont be working in retail all my life, its interesting though as iv done psychology for 4 years and now im doing psychology with criminology at uni...which also ruffles some feathers of customers when they find that out!!!

lol

hope you found a better job, hey, we learn from our experiences and i always give the assistant change in hand when they serve me...

x

It's been years since I worked as a cashier, but I remember it used to tick me off when people did that. Now, after all these years, I STILL hand money directly to the cashier. Even when I sign a charge slip, I hand them their pen back instead of tossing it on the counter. It's just rude, and honestly, time consuming. I have to stand there and scrape change off the counter, THEN count it, then sort it into the cash drawer, so it takes twice as long, and the people in line behind them become impatient. People say they put money on the counter because they dno't know where the cashier's hands have been, etc. Well you know what--you can hand someone money and not even come remotely close to touching them. When they hold out their hand, lay the dollar bills in it first, then the change on top of that (if there is any). Besides--what exactly do these people think is floating around on the money they have in their wallet?

I have never worked in a shop and I agree with you. Some customers treat Shop assistants in a very off hand manner. They consider that the work they do is superior in some way. They do not stop to think that everybody that works does it only for earning money and a shop assistant is exactly the same as every one else in this respect. I like all people I come into contact with and I always respect the job they do. Even more if it is a job that I couldn't do for what ever the reason.

First of all, a shopclerk should NOT be standing there with their hand out waiting for the funds. That is very rude.

Secondly, many people have some serious germ issues. Not everyone wants to touch you, you know. Especially since you've probably touched 75 other people that day at work.

Third, your response is immature and pathetic. You must have been one rude clerk.

They might have a problem, like being germ-phobic. Those people that carry around those little disinfecting wipes. That drives me nuts.

What I hated was when they'd take their sweet time counting out bills, hand them to me, and then I'd have to wait while they dug around in their pocket or change purse to get that exact right amount of change. So I'm holding a wad of bills and the line is backing up behind the person who wants to count out exactly 89 cents or something.

I used to work in a pub and people did that all the time!! It annoyed me cause i found it hard to pick up the pennys off the bar!! I think some people don't realise its rude but others are just plain ignorant!! My advice is if they do that and you have to give them change then stick it on the counter and see if they like it.

Where i work, i am in charge of video rentals, lottery, tobbaco, and a cash register. I've noticed the people that rent, from the video room usually just put the money down. The rest of the people hand the money.

I'm not sure why the people renting movies just put the money down. Maybe they get fed up from waiting to hand me the money, because i'm getting the reciept off of the printer for them to sign.

Maybe they just want you to do more work. It would be too easy to hand you the money.

I find it more annoying when shop workers count the *exact* money given by a disabled person. Or when they hand the change to/ speak to the carer. That is SO insulting.

Perhaps the counter is under a surveillance camera? I was a surveillance operater in a casino. We required that money of all sorts be placed on a flat surace in front of the customer. That way, we could go back and look it up on the tape if there was any question about it.

Weren't annoy me any. I would assume this person was making sure she/he had the correct amount of money and this was his/her way of counting it out. OR I would assume this person had a cold and didn't want to pass any germs onto me. OR this person thought I had a cold or something and didn't want to get my germs onto them. OR they just are used to putting there money on the counter instead of into a persons hand.
