The shih tzu we had years ago did the same thing with my teen-aged son. She was inviting him to play and roughhouse with her. When he did, she was in heaven. We started calling him her "brother". I'd say, "Go get brother, it's time for school", and into his room she'd run to get on the bed and wake him. After he moved out, all I had to do was say, "Brother's coming to see you" and she'd run to wait by the door.
I realize all this sounds demented, but I'll bet your shih tzu is just trying to get your son's attention. Have him play with her and feed her a treat or two. I'll bet they become lifelong friends!

I am sure that if he keeps on showing how he loves your dog, the dog will eventually stop barking and growling at him.

My shih tzu pup used to be petrified when a certain young man came to our house. We later discovered that he was a drug user. I think that the animal could sense this.

when my dog follows someone and growls either she doesnt like them or they have done something to her when i wasnt around. for example my buddy was wrestling with the dog and hurt her while i was out and the next time the guy came over my dog freaked out and growled and snarled at him. or maybe your step son mistreats you and your dog doesnt like him for that.

Are you sure he hasn't given it a kick when your not looking. I have two adopted children and the thirteen year old was caught trying to hurt one of my dogs. He was mad at me for making him do chores. I sure put an end to that. Now I stand over and watch him care for the dogs. His punishment for mistreating is now to study and care for them.

My guess is one of two things....a) the stepson has hurt the dog, either intentionally or unintentionally, sometime in the past, or b) the dog has established that he represents some kind of competitor for your attention, and is jealous.

I think your intuition is right on. There most likely is something about him your dog does not like. Is he ever left alone with your dog?

she probably associates your step son with something bad. You just need to start assciating him with something good! like making him give your dog rewards and treats. =]
