However, I have no prior military experience and I believe would have to go to basic training. What are the time requirements for guard members? Is basic during the weekends or is it the full 8 weeks?
8 weeks full-time would be tough to swing with my current job. Can anyone explain further?

Basic is 8 weeks, no getting around that. Your Advanced Individual Training can be from 7 weeks on up. If work is a problem, don't join.................

Hi, I'm a Specialist in the US Army. I joined the guard before i went active. About a month after i got out of basic we were told we were going to Iraq when i showed up to my company as a young "cherry ***" E-2 Private. I noticed that the National Guard wasn't what i expected (a joke), don't want to bad mouth the guard but, going to Iraq with weekend warriors... no thanks. as soon as i heard the news about Iraq i went straight to a recruiter and said i want to go active duty now and so i did( with an airborne contract ). The morel of the story is the Army is hurtin for people soo bad that that they will give you a Ranger, SF, Airborne whatever you want. If you go active. Not trying to recruit you, but if your in shape and want to do the cool **** go active duty and be a grunt if you got balls.

You would be absent from work for basic training plus AIT. However your employer cannot take any action against you for this leave of absence. The Soldiers and Sailors Civil Relief Act covers this absence and your job cannot be jeopardized my Military training duties.
