My xp product key has exeeded the amount of times it can be used. I was told a can try and call microsoft and get a new one but there are no gaurantees. What can I expect them to ask me about my old product key? What should I tell them? I've used the key two times already, first I reinstalled it on the computer it had already come preinstalled on thinking that would fix a problem and the second time I installed it on my laptop with no problem now I have a third computer and the key is no good! should I tell MS about my new computer or what can I do to get a new key? I believe that when I reinstalled it the first time, that counted against the amount of times I could use the key,is this true? if so, should I tell MS that? How can I get a new key?

The simplest answert to all this is MSoft have in place safeguards for a reason to stop multiple installations using same product key supplied on various computersie; handing around to mates etc..
If you need a key then ring MSoft speak to them ,BUT odds they will tell you to purchase another one, don't try to cheat....♥.

If you have a Retail license you can use it as often as you like but only on one PC at a time (some come with licenses for 2PCs).

If you have an OEM license (came with your PC) then this will help :

" Microsoft has recently made changes to the Windows license agreement, saying that “An upgrade of the motherboard is considered to result in a new personal computer to which Microsoft OEM operating system software cannot be transferred from another computer."

This will force users who upgrade their motherboard, even via the OEM, to purchase a new license agreement. The only exception is a defect for which the OEM replaces the motherboard.

Microsoft claims it needs to have "one base component left standing that would still define that original PC. Since the motherboard contains the CPU and is the heart and soul of the PC, when the motherboard is replaced (for reasons other than defect) a new PC is essentially created.”

Microsoft has asked its OEM partners to begin enforcing the new policy when they upgrade clients computers. "

**** Just tell them the mainboard was replaced by the manufacturer ****

You can only install Windows On ONE computer. It sounds like you installed it on 2 computers and trying to put it on a third. You are out of luck MS will tell you you to buy a new key. If you are trying to put XP back ON THE SAME computer this is ok and they will instruct you how to do it.

Don't use the key above.... It must b e an authentic key. Microsoft will check automatically with updates.

Call Microsoft and explain to them that you had to reinstall the xp on the comp 4 times now because your computer was crashing out due to the fact the windows sucks so much. Hopefully they will be able to help you out, otherwise your gonna end up needing to buy a new key.

well the key is for ONE computer only. That way you could not give it to friends and they could all get free copies. Also once you load it make sure you make a Recovery DVD. Recovery cds take about 8 to make and a DVD is only one disc used. If you have problems, do a recovery or hit f10 when you boot. Follow instructions.

For your new computer, just switch internal hard drives from the old to the new one.

You need to pay for another key. You are entitled to run XP with the same product key on only one system. Each computer needs to have a seperate key and should be paid for.

You can contact Customer Service by e-mail or phone them Monday through Friday, 8 A.M. to 10 P.M. (Eastern Time), at (888) 218-5617 (toll-free in the United States. Tell them the truth, and give them your existing product key. They will check it, then probably either give you or send you another key. As long as you deal honestly with them, they will help you.
