petersons field guide's are known as some of the best. they have regional ones covering smaller areas, and a national one. i would also strongly recommend a course at your local horticulture college.. you can learn even more about the plants, and to tell you the truth, the field guides can be difficult to follow with out the knowledge of the terms they use such as ovate and dentate, and simple and compound. a good place to get this info would be a horticultural class...
