Nicotine is the active ingredient in tobacco. It's a stimulant. Stimulants do have medical uses. It's pretty clear that nicotine could have some sort of medical purpose. That doesn't mean cigarettes have medical purposes, though. And it's important to not confuse cigarettes with nocotine.
Cigarettes have nicotine in them. But they also have a lot of chemicals and ingredients that make them extra-addictive. The same concept can be applied to fast-food. Fast-food does have some nutritional value. But the only time you should really turn to fast-food for nutrition is if you're starving. Like cigarettes, fast-food is designed to make you want more.
So to answer your question, yes, cigarettes do have their own use. But unfortunately, one of the main purposes of cigarettes is to get the human body addicted to them. Why is that good? -- because it generates a lot of money for the tobacco companies. Does this sort of behavior pay off in the long run (getting people addicted to, and sick from your product, as you get rich off it?) Our five year-old conscience tells us to "treat others as you would like to be treated". So why would tobacco companies treat people like this?!
The thing is, there's so much money coming in from tobacco, that it's hard to see all that money and say "no thanks". Individual states tax cigarettes. Some of the most expensive tobacco taxes, like in the state of Rhode Island and New Jersey, reach $2.42 a pack. The government likes that money. But a lot of that money goes into state funding. So ultimately, every citizen profits on the tobacco money.
Tobacco companies spend millions of dollars lobbying to politicians, and donating to their campaigns, so tobacco companies have a better chance at getting legislation passed that will help them make more money.

Well, here in the USA, they are still legal... so the manufacturers make them because that is THEIR BUSINESS !! They are a company whose goal is to make money for their investors.
They are GREAT for calming and occupying my hands. Now I don't want ANY young folks to START smoking... but PLEASE leave those of us already addicted ALONE.
Also, the state and federal governments make a MINT off tobacco taxes. In California, current EXCISE Taxes (this doesn't include the normal SALES tax) on tobacco products generate over 1.05 BILLION for the State EACH YEAR... If Prop 86 had passed, it would have generated $700 BILLION.
Here in California, our State excise taxes on cigarettes and other tobacco products remain at the current level of 87 cents per pack... for ME a pack a day smoker that means I pay a minimum of $317 a year in tax to SMOKE ! If Prop 86 had passed in Nov. 2006 I would pay an incredible $1266 annual tax
Note that there has been LITTLE evidence that increased taxes have ANY effect in the overall smoking rates in a state... It's just a tax on a minority.

Because so many people are addicted at this point, that the manufacturers know they can make a lot of money by producing them.

Manufacturers keep making cigarettes because they make a profit from them. Whether or not they are bad for you has no bearing on what manufacturers choose to do.

Cigarette companies thrive on the addiction of their smokers. If manufacturers quit making them, they would lose a ton of money, and probably be sued from someone addicted and nicking.

It has no good use.
They put addicting things into it to keep you buying.
It's all about the money, they give 0 care for you. That's why they add addicting things to keep you wanting more.
If you haven't start by now, don't bother. It's like going to the BBQ grill and inhaling all that smoke, it sucks.

People who smoke are very valuable to their Country. The taxes on Cigarettes go straight to the Government in both UK and USA. Smokers can feel happy they are doing their bit to keep the Country afloat while they slowly kill themselves.

MONEY! They are able to keep making them because of the warning warning label they put on the packs. Every one who buys cigarettes knows that they cause cancer, so it is a risk they are willing to take. That keeps these companies in business.

They are in business to make money, and they are making a ton of money with no regard to the ill effects that cigarette smoking has on people. In my opinion, cigarettes do absolutely no good unless you like walking around stinking of cigarette smoke and smelling like a dirty ashtray.
