I'm going to get a flattop haircut. Should the sides and back be shaved ?

Go for the hightop fade. No defined 'line' where the longer hair starts/stops.

I wore a flat top for years. The sides and back should be shaved, not completely bald, but shaved yes.

ALSO... and this is VERY important!!!! Only let an old white man cut your flat top!!!

It depends on how long you are going to leave the top. The sides and back should be shorter than the top, but if you are going to go with a "long" flat-top, then you should leave some on the sides and back. If you are going to do a "short" flat-top, then they should be shaved.

If you are going for the high-and-tight then yes the sides would be clipped close. (Service haircut)
If you want it a little longer, I would suggest using a clipper guard.

i must warn you.

1. unless you are from 1992 DONT DO IT you'll look like such a prat.

if you still want to do it (WHY?!)

2.the only racial group who can just about get away with it are black people. its not just that they have the right hair type, and that un-afro hair looks ridiculous in this style, if it can be achieved at all. if you are white with very curly hair IT WILL STILL LOOK RIDICULOUS
