I've been dying my hair for a little under 10 years now. I usually use reds and I use at-home products. Reds always fade fast, but I just recently dyed my hair black. Within a month it had turned into a really dark brown. I need to redye my hair because my roots are a light brown and it looks so bad. I'm just not sure if it's worth redying it a different color or if I should just dye it a color similar to my hair color and be done with dying my hair. =(

Any suggestions on how to get it to stay or why it wont?

U need to go to a professional and have them strip the hair of excess chemicals then the dye should work afterward. i am not sure if the sell hair stripping agents but u can check and probably do it yourself.

I have been a cosmetologist for over 15 years now. There could be alot going on. Is your hair gray? that can cause fading a maybe trying a different shampoo for colored hair, or even trying to up the formula your using (stronger peroxide).
The shampoo plays a role as it can strip your hair. Are you clarifying your hair before you dye it? The night before you need to use a stronger shampoo to get all the particles that can attach to the hair shaft and cause color to "slide".
Have you ever been told you have beaded hair? That can cause some people to have this issue. Have you recently been or have been for a few years on any meds? They can coat the shaft and cause issues to!
If your happy with the color you used I would not recommend trying to change it now because black is a VERY hard dye to remove and color will not lift color. So if you at this point pick a lighter shade you are gonna look two toned....Just trying to save you some corrective color expenses.
I just wrote a book...lol but hopefully I helped.

Hair color attaches to protein in your hair. Sounds like maybe you dont have enough protein in your hair if it is fading so quickly. If your hair weak and brittle? Those are signs of not enough protein as well. Go get a really nice protein reconstructor from a salon. Use the Joico K-Pack. Then try coloring your hair again. Also, make sure you use 10 Volume not 20Volume!!! Go to a beauty supply store and buy your black hair dye and 10 Volume developer.

using at home products really damage your hair the metallic dyes in them actually cut into the cuticle of your hair. Salon productslift the cuticle to deposit the color.Your hair wont hold color because your cuticle is blown wide open & it won't close too much damage. I suggest cutting off as much as u can several cond treatments& mabe a semi- permanent color until it is all grown out & cut off. then start going to a pro or a beauty school for your color your hair will be healthier. P.S. beauty schools are cheaper if money is an issue.

Well- depending on what type of dye you are using it can have different effects on your hair. I would suggest buying a color from a professional store that only sells to licensed beauticians. Sometimes if you keep dying your hair different colors it's harder to bring back certain colors. OR it could be the type of developer you are using.

USUALLY EVERY HAIR COLOR YOU USE, AND AFTER SEVERAL MONTHS , IT USUALLY FADES, IT IS NOT GOOD TO KEEP COLORING YOUR HAIR, YOU SHOULD WAIT 6 MONTHS OR SO BEFORE YOU COLOR YOUR HAIR AGAIN, THEY DO HAVE NOW TOUCH UP,COLORS. WHICH YOU ONLY TOUCH UP THE ROOTS. AND YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR HAIR CONDITION WHEN YOU COLOR YOUR HAIR. THE CHEMICALS IN THE HAIR COLOR DRIES OUT YOUR HAIR. AND ALSO TRIM THE SPLIT ENDS OFF. AND WHEN YOU COLOR YOUR HAIR MAKE SURE THERE IS NO GEL, HAIR SPRAY. OR ANYTHING ELSE THAT YOU USE ON YOUR HAIR.

Try a clarifying shampoo before coloring next time. It should strip all other substances off your hair so it will be porous for coloring. This will also be drying so after coloring be sure to moisturize.

You may need to go to a salon and have your hair stripped and repaired. After that you may need to wait before you start dying it again.
