I do get like that and I am not a shy person. Especially when I am starting something new. I just recently went back to school to take some update courses and the night I had to go, I honestly thought I was going to be sick. And if I am going on a blind date, I have had to pull my car over to side of the road because I feel that sick. It isn't just you. I try and breathe slowly and think of the worst possible scenerio and then I laugh and feel much better. Good luck and take care of you.

So... What Pez dispenser decided you needed Lexapro? Family doctor or an actual psychiatrist?
Try experience... Try suffering through your anxiety to realize that things are really not all that bad on the other end of your fear, and if they are, you have the right and choice to walk away and DECIDE not to be interactive with things that make you uncomfortable. How about asking yourself why, or what it is about these circumstances that makes you uncomfortable? Have you tried that or did you just take the quick fix?
I really blame it on social restraints and the expectations that people have of you... especially as a younger person. Social pressure comes as a result of you going against yourself to try and squeeze yourself into a mold that you really don't fit into, anxiety is your body telling your brain "Nope...I don't agree with this and won't do it!" It is your inner voice screaming at your Ego. The anxiety comes as a result... It is like internal rebellion.
When you go to the doctors office and you get nervous... Try telling yourself that it will be okay, try talking to yourself in an inner dialog that prevents YOUR EMOTIONS from taking over and putting themselves in charge over YOUR INTELLECT. Which knows better... which knows that nothing there can hurt you.
Believe me... the monster at your doctors office is the Lexapro... Funny how you're not nervous about that?

Working on your self confidence will no doubt help with the anxiety, however having really bad anxiety makes it much harder to do. It's a vicious cycle. The medication should make the anxiety more controllable so you can start working on being more outgoing and less shy. It's something that many people deal with. My husband has social anxiety, and he's not even shy.
To the post from Rand: you don't know the difference between normal shyness and anxiety. Please don't tell someone they should go off their medication unless you are a doctor and know what you are talking about. That's like someone who doesn't have blood sugar problems telling a diabetic to get off their insulin and just eat healthier.

No one needs to get sick. So the doctor is ruled out.
Going to school is a must so you cannot get sick as an excuse.
Remove lexapro from your diet and drink milk instead.
You are not nervous.
No doubt you are shy, but there are lots of individuals who are shy and do not medicate themselves for it.
So from tomorrow onwards you are not shy and you are fit and fine; no medication; wake early; dress well; pack your books carefully; go to school walking boldly and singing your favourite song; with your chest held high.
Do what I have told you one day and the rest is automatic.
