I have a 7 month old lab that has only dropped one testicle. My vet said to give him about a year and if the other one hasn't dropped, they'd go in through his abdomen to retrieve it. I'm in the process of getting second opinions, because I want him neutered, but I don't like the idea of major surgery. I was wondering what the effect would be if only the dropped testicle was removed?

Also, I know this is an inherited condition, should I inform the breeder?

Having only the dropped testicle removed is the WRONG decision. If the testicle hasn't dropped by 7 months...then its not going to drop. Not sure why a vet would recommend waiting a year to do this. Your dog is old enough NOW. Unfortunately it is a bit more cost involved. It is essentially 2 (or even 3) surgeries at one time. One to removed the dropped testicle, and another to find and remove the other one. If the vet can't feel it in the groin area just prior to surgery, then an incision has to be made into the abdomen to find it. Retained testicles have a high incidence of developing cancer, or emitting female-like hormones that produce "Male Feminizing Syndrome" with many related symptoms. Also a dog can still breed with the retained testicle left. This is a highly inheritable condition that male pups would probably inherit, and female pups would pass on. Having the dog neutered properly is the best decision, and there is no need to wait.

If you want to get him neutered he needs both testicles removed because if you leave one you are defeating the purpose of getting him neutered. If he has one he can still have future prostate problems as well risk having torsion (twisting of organs). Do talk to another vet about what to do. But most likely if it hasn't dropped now it probably wont. The surgery usually costs more because the vet has to go retrieve the ascended testicle but it should be done.

If they didn't drop together get the neuter ASAP. They will have to go through the abdomen but it is a very common surgery and you shouldn't worry. The testicle still being in the abdomen is going to cause more problems so get it out.

Yes, inform the breeder and see what they tell you. They are sterile when there testicles remain inside aren't they?I was told that the condition can turn cancerous later if not done, ask for another opinion.I personally have never owned a male dog, but this sounds serious.....
