I honestly believe that the one thing that make any relationship work is honesty.
My reason to believe this is that with honesty you have everything. All the other things automatically fall into place when you have unlimited honesty. Other things like trust,respect,value,understanding,communication etc. even love because you'll love and appreciate the fact that the person his honest and therefore will not have a reason to be or feel insecure at anytime because you'll know that this person will tell you the truth at any cost. Therefore forgiving will not be an issue if the person mess up, because at the end of the day the person is honest to tell you what they did or have done in order to reconcile and move on.(if you understand what I'm saying).It all boils down to being honest all the time with that significant other in order to maintain a good loving relationship that's free of insecurities.
That's my opinion.

Trust is the most important thing in any relationship wether it's marriage or just dating. If you don't have trust then your relationship won't go no where. You also need to be happy with each other and want to be together. If your not happy or she's not or your both not then you shouldn't be together. Make sure you have some common ground to work on so you can get along and not fight. Also honesty is important to.

there's no secret in having a happy and healthy relationship. If you two are compatible and truly love each other, you will find ways to keep your relationship happy and healthy

TALK!!!!!!
You can't have trust without talking and you can't have a smooth relationship without talking. Comunication is the #1 downfall in the US. People don't talk things over.
Example:
You're in a little fight just the two of you but you work it out HOW? You talk it out with each other and if you had talked before the fight, there wouldn't have been a fight but a little argument is good for the couple caus erthe best part of an argument is making up after it.

I think if we all knew the secret, there wouldn't be any divorce in this nation! But I think that honesty, trust, and respect are the key things to develop with the one you love.
