After quitting smoking, I decided to continue with my health-consciousness and quit tanning as well. It was very hard to do, especially in the middle of winter and with about $50 worth of tans left on my account. My skin looks great, but I can't help but feel like a pale monster. I'm blinding people with my whiteness! I would love to use a self tanner or try a spray-on tan at a salon, but I am terrifed to end up orange or streaked. What are some of your experiences and what do you suggest?

Congratualtions on quitting smoking! And cheers for giving up on tanning too. You've just taken two big steps in protecting your health for the rest of your life.

Winter can be rough because we're not only pale, but we're kind of ashy and sallow-looking too. But I've always thought that a tan in winter looks kind of silly (unless you just came back from the Carribbean). Moisturize your skin religiously! That will do a lot to improve the appearance, as well as gently exfoliating to smooth the rough spots and removing the dead skin.

If you really want to do the sunless tanning, exfoliate your skin first. Both the spray tans at the salon and the stuff you buy at the drug store work equally well and the trick is just making sure that it's spread evenly over your skin with a touch more on the high points of your face which naturally get more sun (your nose, forehead, chin and cheekbones). Both last around the same time (about a week).

The key is to go for a suble hint of color first, then go progressively darker with each application. Go too dark too quickly and you will look painted. A subtle tan rarely looks artificial.

If you have a special event, you might want to spurge on getting an airbrush tan. An artist will literally paint you from head to toe and highlight all the good parts. It's the most money, but will look gorgeous. Unfortunately it really doesn't last any longer than the less expensive methods.

We are so kindered spirits! I'm trying to quit tanning to and I hate being pale, I'm so white. I have tried the Mystic Tanning booth and it works pretty well. I did not come close to being orange and had a really nice natural looking tan. However, it only lasted for 3 days and my knuckles got some white lines in them. For my face, I use Neutrogena Sunless Tanning Foam all the time, it's by far my favorite or you can pick up the california tan - self tanning tinited lotion from a tanning salon. You have a lot of options, I do not recommend those tanning moisturizers (i.e., Jergens and Dove etc.) they will leave you orange, stinky and after a while they start to leave spots. Right now I'm tanning at Hollywood tans once a week just so I don't have that pastey whitness to me even though it bothers me that I know I'm going to get wrinkels from it I just can't stop! anyway I feel your pain and good luck. Try Mystic tan and see how you like it, it's expensive but worth a shot.

You should exfoliate first, then apply a moisturizer to even out the porosity of your skin. Then apply your self tanner. Make sure to wash your hands with soap and water!

Or, just go get a Mystic tan! Those are awesome and NOT orange at all. I've done it 6 times and each time I loved it.

A pro applied spray on tan will not be streaky - I am NOT talking about spray in a can SELF tanners. The pro will ensure even coverage with no streaks or runs.

Again, you shouldn't be fearful of orangeness, with a pro it don't happen! If you are nervous, try a light one first time and build up.

Have a look at the photos at my tanners at http://www.tropical-sunrise.com/spray-tan-gallery.html and you can see the great non-orange non-streaky tans that can be achieved.

I wouldn't even try fake tanners! they never turn out right. there is nothing wrong with being a little pale! People who are tan year round look a little off anyways....You don't need to be tan to be beautiful....you may feel like a freak, but trust me...no one else will even notice.

Don't use unnatural tanning. People will look at you and see that you are throwing away your money on something so superficial and you could just as easily chill in the sun. Find a good book and a quiet place in the sun and get a nicer looking tan.

Gradual tan lotion- there are a couple brands out there- you can find them at any pharmacy store (CVS... Walgreens...) or Walmart or Target etc... It builds a tan in stages instead of popping out one day with a mysterious tanness about you lol I use it, and it's just a normal part of the day- shower, dry off, lotion...

I reccomend Jergens Natural Glow too. It gives you a very realistic tan, and has never made me look orange or streaked. And be sure to exfoliate before you tan.

No dont goto those spray on tan booths. They dont last very long. If your patient enough use Jergens Natural Glow. Since its a lotion it doesnt streak and i use it on my face and it doesnt break my face out (may be different for you) Also it smells nice! Just wash your hands after.

see if there is a salon near you that has spray on tans. They do it for you. Just exfoliate before you go. It is much healthier.
