Anyone who is Bipolar should be on a mood stabilizer medication. These include: Lithium, Depekote, Tegretol, Lamicatal, Topomax, and Neurototin.
The most prescribed for Bipolar 1 are Lithium and Depekote.
The most prescribed for Bipolar 2 are Lamictal.
In addition, many Bipolar people take antipsychotics like Risperdal and Seroquel. They also take anti-depressants.
However, they should always be treated with a mood stabilizer.

There are a lot of different medications out there used to help stabilize moods. Several of these are actually anti-seizure medications. The link below lists the medications plus some positives/negatives of each one. The reason Topamax isn't on the list is because this particular psychiatrist thinks that it could be more harmful than helpful. I tend to agree because my doctor put me on it as an aid to the Lamictal I take. I became extremely depressed, which ironically enough it was supposed to do the exact opposite.

There are a lot of different meds available. Some of them I have worked my way through at different points in time for both the mania and the depression are: Prozac, Paxil, Lexapro, Carbatrol, Lithium, Zoloft, Kolonopin, and there a few more that have since been removed from the market since I took them. I am currently taking. Depekote ER, Serequel, Topomax, Lamictal, and Trasydone (which I am taking as a sleep aid since the Serequel doesn't assist me in sleeping as it should). There are many different types availble out there to help people with bi-polar, and you will find that a lot of them are actually anti-seizure medications as well.
