Absolutely not. Before the crusades, Jews and Christians held high positions is Muslim civilization, including public offices, etc. Christians still exist, along with ancient churches, in predominantly Muslim areas. Most of the turmoil you think of today is a result of European terrorism (crusades) and later expansion of European "empire".

The verses in the Qur'an that people use to show Muslims are to kill people are verses about very specific times, conditions and groups.

As Muslims, we are to debate and invite to our religion with the "best words". The existence of non-muslims in the near east in the middle ages and during the renaissance, as well as countless manuscripts written by Christians *in arabic* and published in MUSLIM countries from the 11th to the 17th century bear witness to the tolerance and openness that preceded the tumult of our time, which, again, is largely a result of the trauma of the modern era with it's colonialism, exploitation and the sudden industrial revolution in the West.

You have to understand that there was a time when Muslims were conquered by others, who then converted to Islam and took power, who had never lived together with Jews and Christians and were interested largely in money and power. Far from pious Muslims, these people exploited (and continue to exploit) the more pious but less learned of their subjects. The violence you think of is largely associated with these kinds of people, just like the violence of Christianity's past is an aberrance from the true faith.

I'm a Christian but studied Islam and I have a girlfriend who use to be an muslim but is now a Christian and they are tought to convert people. You must understand though that they are also tought that they are at war with the west and so either convert them or kill them is they way for them.

Muslims, now close your eyes and imagine this....what will you do if you wake up on judgement day only to see muhammad(pbuh) burning and suffering and screaming in pain in Hell, with his tongue pierced with a large hook and pulled out and his fingers crushed with a heavy iron hammer.

Really. Think about this. What are you going to do? Shout for allah?

My point is this. Do you think you have REALLY searched enough spiritually/religiously/historically... to know for sure that Islam is the religion for you?
