Is there any dentists (or non-dentist) out there that could please tell me whether it is possible to have underbite surgery without the need to go through years of painful braces? I'm 30 years old now by the way. I really hate my jaws. I look just like popeye when I smile.

Aw shucks, I think you look cute...

I did some research on the Web regarding this and braces are nearly always required both before and after surgery. Only a dentist can say for sure, and only after examining you. However, if you are like 98% of cases, you will need braces before and after surgery.

The reason is that jaw surgery is not precise enough to control exactly how your teeth will interact afterward. Only braces can get the precision to move the teeth exactly where they need to be.

Not what you wanted to hear, I know.

Some information on underbite surgery is at the link below.
