They should be Pine wood boards about 12"X12" and 1" thick, you can get them even cut to those dimensions at your local, Home depot, Lowell's and lumber yard.

Just keep them in your home do not leave them outside or in your car, they will absorb moisture witch in ture will make them harder to break at test time.

Last of all you could ask your instructor, some schools may have a limited supply and only charge you a buck or so per board. They will have the correct size and you won't be asked a bunch of dumb question by some employee at the store.

Hope this info helps and good luck.

Get a long piece of 1"x12" white pine #2 or #3 grade. Cut it into 1 foot sections (12x12x1)

When you say test it implies that your Dojo will have a say in the dimensions. Check with your instructor.
I always used
1 x 12 clear white pine

I've never heard of a BYOB test. Must be a low budget dojo. Where do your class fees go?

If your instructor insists that you provide your own boards, then he should specify the size/type.

It depends on the association. We use white pine, 1" X 12" about 9" wide. Some assoc (WTF for example use a more brittle wood, I don't remember what it's called. Ask your instructor what you will be breaking.
