I have sleep maintainance problems and sometimes sleep onset problems. I have stopped taking herbal remedies they sometimes help but they have not stopped my sleep problems. Im thinking about taking phamacuticals but Im worried about side effects such as addiction and tolerance. MAybe they will only help in the short term and my insomnia will rebound. Should I take them? Did they help you at all?

See a MD. Also, consider sleep study. Your Doc may recommend one. Pills only as last resort. Try Rest and relaxation techniques for now.

Try over the counter sleep aids first and see if you get any results. There is one called simply sleep and will help you get to sleep but has no pain killers in it and is non habit forming. Also, tylenol pm works pretty well. I have taken both as well as prescription Ambien which is great. Just if you do get a prescription, don't tkae them for more than 7 days in a row without taking a break from them. They are supposed to also be non habit forming. Not sleeping can cause major health problems and eventually lead to anxiety and depression. I suggest if it continues that you go to a sleep clinic and find out where the problem stems from. It would be worth your time and effort and getting a good nights sleep will make a huge difference in how you feel physically and emotionally. Good luck!

Well i have seen many doctors and nothing can cure insomnia accept you, most people who suffer from it have a very active mind and thats why ywe can't sleep, if our brains are still working then you can't sleep in order for a person to get sleep they must have their brain shut down. I have tried herbel remedies and of course nothing works for me either, although my doctor did prescribe a low dosage of Lorazepam and it worked wonders for me. I thought my problems were cured until i woke up i always felt groggy and had a long time getting a start on my days, now i just read i find if i start reading a country western book or something really boring then i get tired and i often fall asleep with the book still in my hand.

You need to teach your body proper sleep hygiene. The bed is for 2 things: sleep and sex. If you find yourself doing anything else, get out. You need to train your body that the bed is meant for serious sleeping. Get rid of the TV in your bedroom, get rid of the stack of reading materials in your bedroom, get rid of the bedside phone. Most people do not need sleep medications if they can follow these steps. If you can't fall asleep, get out of bed and do something else until you are tired. Eventually, you will re-train your body, although there may be some miserable nights in the meanwhile.
Also, consider that insomnia may be a manifestation of other illness, e.g. depression, anxiety, etc.

There is a new sleep medication out on the market. It's called Rozerem and is not addictive or habit forming and is easily tolerated. It is by prescription only, so you need to see your Doctor. Herbal remedies should not be used because dosages vary so much from brand to brand. Plus, herbs like Kava, Kava can cause problems with your liver. Good Luck!!!
