Understanding your people in the country you are representing and helping them achieve their goals is one way to succeed. Work to create jobs and cash flow to or through your country and you can easily make sure your country has economic clought. Know what your numbers are; how many people from your country are in the one you are in; how many businesses your country has; your national history; and where the long term future lies.

Be positive. Don't bad mouth others out of spite. Quell your raw emotions so you can ignore extremists and work to provide jobs, money, and education at your location and your home country.

Well, what are the chances of you actually becoming a diplomat right after graduation? Don't they require that you have some real world experience first?

I think you'd be a better diplomat if you worked at a business first. Or a few businesses, especially in the service industry. Where are you from?

Try to find things to do that unite the ex-patriate community where ever you go as a diplomat. Their concerns are your concerns. But don't allow yourself to ONLY meet with ex-patriates. Meet with natives of the country you are a diplomat to.

Focus on infrastructure, not on big showy projects to impress foreigners. Remember to take pride in your homeland no matter what you see in foreign lands.
