click start / programs / accessories / system tools / character map. this will bring up all sorts of aditional characters you can use.

If you have WIndows you can go to Control Panel, then Language and Regional Settings in Windows XP (otherwise look for the keyboard in ME, 98 or 95), then go to details tab and add the language. You will see language toolbar now in the start bar. You can switch the keyboard to type accents.

There is an explanation on this forum on how to do the alt plus number codes (I don't like them, but hey).

If you change the keyboard layout you can learn where the accents are so you can type faster rather than using codes. The downside of changing the keyboard is that some computers have restrictions such as at the library or school, so you would have to learn to use the codes as well.

If you are working on a MAC, there are a number of shortcuts you can use on the keyboard. Hold down the option key and type the letter of your choice to get the accent you'd like, the accent will appear and be highlighted (if it is a sole accent). Then strike the letter that you would like "accented".

Switch your default keyboard to United States
International. Then when you want to type á, for
example, hit right ALT plus the a.
