No alcohol. No drugs. No soft cheeses. No preprepared salads. No soft serve icecream (The soft cheeses, preprepared salads and soft serve icecream could all contain Listeria, which is a bacteria which could cause miscarriage, even if there is only one of the bacteria present).
Eat a variety of foods, especially high calcium foods. Make sure that you take a multivitamin if your intake is inadequate. Take a folic acid supplement to reduce the likelihood of neural tube defects such as Spina Bifida.
Keep up your fluid intake to reduce the likelihood of urinary tract infections, which you are 5 times more likely to get when you are pregnant.
I recommend 2 books called "What to expect when you're expecting" and "What to eat when you're expecting", by Sandee Hathaway, Heidi Murkoff (there is another author, but I forget her name.) I managed to get these 2 books as one volume. They also write another couple of books called "What to expect the first year" and "What to expect the toddler years" which are both good also. Best of luck!!

Well folic acid is definetly good for baby development, and you can find that in a lot of cereals preferably with whole grain, and you can always check the back of the box. Another thing is to take multivitamin pills because a baby takes away a lot of your nutrients, so it's easy to become anemic through pregnancy. I took flinstone vitamins because the prenatal vitamins made me sick. I believe vitamin B curbs the nausea... But really don't "put" your self on a "diet". Just eat how you did before you did but just add some more healthier things because your prone to more heartburn and indigestion. Incorporate a lot of fresh fruits, whole grain, WATER, WATER, WATER, and don't eat a lot of spicy foods. But it's really up to you because when I was pregnant I got 24 hour sickness and I couldn't eat anything. And your biggest mistake is putting that eating for two mentality, because you're gonna look like it after the pregnancy and that baby fat is hard to work off honey. You don't have to make a complete 360, but just try to eat more healthier, slow down the fried and spicy foods, and STAY ACTIVE! It will help you in the end, trust me!

The healthy things you would eat normally except you will need to eat more since you need the extra calories. Just remember to limit the amount of sugar and high fat intake because you will have to loose it after the baby is born. To help curb a sweet tooth, eat fruit. There are articles about avoiding red dye in foods and certain cheeses, also avoid raw honey. Ask your doctor about that. Remember to increase your fluid intake. Have fun and remember this is supposed to be a time to enjoy and an excuse to indulge....a little.

It's great you are interested in this, but it's a really big topic and you would be best off getting yourself a book on the subject. Try Patrick Holford's Optimum Nutrition Before During and After Pregnancy.

I have diabetes, so when I was pregnant I was on a strict diet with absolutely no sugar in my food, no diet drinks, only water to drink and I did just fine and my little man was very healthy when he was born. He was a little early and had no complications whatsoever. Ask your doctor though. They'll know what's best for you in your specific situation.

You shouldn't be on any type of diet when you're pregnant, unless you have gest. diabetes. Your baby needs all kinds of nutrients in order to develop and grow.

Ask your doctor for more specific eating ideas to help you and your baby.
