The dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan ended world war two. The decision to do so was solely that of the Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, Harry S. Truman. As President Truman had to ask himself whether or not it was justifiable to use a weapon of untold destructive force. I think he made a wise decision.

The dropping of the bombs saved many lives. Look at the battles fought on Japan controlled islands. They fought until the very end. There are films of Japanese people killing themselves to avoid being caught by the US forces. Suicide attacks were also very popular when the Japanese were nearing the end. Also, don't forget the US soldiers that died in these battles. Japan was not going to surrender. To get a surrender the Japanese government and military needed to know that there was absolutely no way to win. There were still a few deluded fools in the end. Those bombs saved many lives on both sides.

Yes. It was justified.

If you are an American or Japanese citizen, consider this. Would you be alive today if we had NOT dropped the bomb?

I know that I might not, as my father was part of the occupation forces in Japan after the surrender. Guess what he would have been if we didn't? And probably your grandfather as well would have been part of that invasion force.

As far as the Japanese, consider every woman and child living then would have either put up resistance or committed suicide (see Saipan, 1944) - well, they would have eventually ceased to exist as a race.

I am amazed at the amount of ignorant answers given on this valid question. Those that say it was the "greatest crime" never spent time in a gulag, were marched on the "Path to Heaven", or sent their children willingly get into planes in order for the chance to crash them into an American naval vessel.

definite we were. positively. If there might want to were a nicely-known invasion of the jap homestead islands they expected that the U. S. might want to have taken over a million million casualties, now to not indicate what number casualties the jap might want to have taken. the jap inhabitants of Okinawa dedicated suicide somewhat than be taken over with information from the U. S.. might want to you imagine how mainland jap might want to have reacted. dropping the bombs killed about one hundred twenty 5,000 each and each and every in Nagasaki and Hiroshima (which includes maximum cancers deaths after the warfare)for a grand complete of about 250,000 lifeless. time-honored Curtis Lemay's hearth bombing of Tokyo killed over 500,000 and that changed into with incendiaries not nukes. those who're hostile to the dropping of the bombs omit the point. There might want to were a a lot, a lot, much better lack of existence if the Allies really landed troops on mainland Japan in the course of the warfare. they are often unaware of that fact and are basically horrified with information from nukes frequently. They probable do not comprehend that nukes saved the peace in Europe for over 50 years and prevented yet another massive Arab-Israeli warfare when you consider that 'seventy 3. probable some hippie-peacenik or someone with an awl to grind hostile to the U. This question is absurd…I do not mean that as an insult to you, but I do mean it as an insult to your education…today, in this new love everyone American society, we are taught very little about history and why things were done…it irritates me to no end to hear people say we shouldn’t have done it or it was the ultimate evil…they know nothing of American history…they do not know of the unprovoked Sunday attack on pearly harbor (which by the way the Japanese teach we started the war, not them in their schools), they do not know of the TENS OF THOUSANDS of American and other allied soldiers who were worked to death in prisoner of war camps, they do not know of the unspeakable acts of CANNIBALISM the imperial Japanese army carried out on allied prisoners of war…they do not know of the hideous experiments using allied prisoners of war and Chinese and Korean civilians as test subjects for biological and chemical weapons…they do not know of the Japanese soldiers tossing Chinese and Korean babies in the air and bayoneting them just for sport…they do not know of the merciless killings of allied prisoners of war to hid all of the war crimes they had committed or just to keep them from ever seeing freedom again…they do not know of the weather balloons used to float bombs across the pacific to bomb the US and the only successful attempt killed innocent civilians…they do not know that the Japanese parliament voted recently to ignore the terms of the surrender and REARM THEIR MILITARY…but then again they don’t care either…my grandfather was in the marines before and through out World War 2 in the pacific and was waiting on a troopship for the home island invasion…another thing that education teaches now is that thousands of American soldiers would have died trying to take the Japanese home islands…this is not true, don’t trust the BS that you are fed by today’s society…just request official documents from the department of defense…estimates were that ONE MILLION American lives alone would be lost trying to take Japan by conventional methods…so next time you ask this question, get your facts a little straighter, or just ask a veteran who was there…then again, maybe its good that you ask this question…most people are ignorant of their history, and they certainly won’t learn the truth in a classroom…hopefully this helps some…I definitely support the dropping of the atomic bombs on Japan…I know I wouldn’t be here if we hadn’t, and I wonder how many of the peace loving hippies realize that they probably wound’s be here either if we hadn’t done the RIGHT THING and dropped the bomb

yes and no, it started a whole thing of the arms race and cold war, but when the bomb was dropped it ended a war that was thought was going to take more lives than necessary due to Japanese mentality of no surrender

No. Japan was a broken country. Dropping not one, but two bombs on them was not moral, and it had nothing to do with ending the war. The war had ended in Europe months before, and the war in the Pacific was in shreds. The Japanese were already crushed, not to mention starving.

Y E S, It was dropped to end a long and bloody
war that would of killed millions more if the US had invaded Japan. Japan was going to fight
until every one was killed and they did not want to surrender. so the dropping of the bombs
made them realize that it was futile to continue.
