Dog fighting is illegal in North America (where I'm from), and rightly so.
The injuries inflicted and sustained by dogs participating in dogfights are frequently severe, even fatal. The American pit bull terriers used in the majority of these fights have been specifically bred and trained for fighting and are unrelenting in their attempts to overcome their opponents. With their extremely powerful jaws, they are able to inflict severe bruising, deep puncture wounds, and broken bones.
Dogs used in these events often die of blood loss, shock, dehydration, exhaustion, or infection hours or even days after the fight. Other animals are often sacrificed as well. Some owners train their dogs for fights using smaller animals such as cats, rabbits, or small dogs. These "bait" animals are often stolen pets or animals obtained through "free to good home" advertisements.
Numerous law enforcement raids have unearthed many disturbing facets of this illegal "sport." Young children are sometimes present at the events, which can promote insensitivity to animal suffering, enthusiasm for violence, and a lack of respect for the law. Illegal gambling is the norm at dogfights. Dog owners and spectators wager thousands of dollars on their favorites. Firearms and other weapons have been found at dogfights because of the large amounts of cash present. And dogfighting has been connected to other kinds of violence—even homicide, according to newspaper reports. In addition, illegal drugs are often sold and used at dogfights.
Dogs used for fighting have been bred for many generations to be dangerously aggressive toward other animals. The presence of these dogs in a community increases the risk of attacks not only on other animals but also on people. Children are especially at risk, because their small size may cause a fighting dog to perceive a child as another animal.

I should be illegal and IS. Because it is people promoting animal cruelity but making dogs infect pain onto each other and worse yet making big money off it. Dogs need to be protected and not forced to fight and the people that do fight their dogs, don't even care enough to get them seen by a vet afterwards because they know that there are already laws on the books banning dog fights and they well end up in jail where they do belong! sadly enough a dog (and not just pitbulls) that has been trained to fight will never be able to lose the the need to fight and has to be put down to protect the rest of the public.
Also the people that generally do promote this illegal activity are nothing but gang bangers and thugs who are too lazy and think that they are too good to get up off their tails and go get a legal job like the rest of us!

Of course it should be illegal. It's insane to breed these animals just to fight. It's inhumane and not fair to the breed. For instance, certain breeds such as pitbulls have a bad reputation because of this issue. So many are used in fighting rings that the average family automatically assumes the worst about the breed. It's all about how an animal is raised. I have a friend that adopted her pit as a puppy from animal services and it acts like a kitten. It's as calm and lovable as MY chihuahua's.
Legalizing this would be stupid. It's not legal to beat another human being to death, why would or should it be for animals? Common sense.

It is sick on so many levels. And some wonder where dogs like pits get their reputations! Dog fighting, roosters fighting, dogs running down pigs and killing them, and all the families who pack a lunch and go to be "entertained" for an afternoon. There are words for it, I just can't say them on here. It is illegal, as are many other things we go ahead and do. It is twisted. Would you like to bring back the gladiators also?

No I don't think it should be legal. When I see it in a movie I won't watch until it is done I hate to listen to a dog whine it tears my heart out. They don't hurt anybody they are just looking for love just like humans do. They are cross because of the owners. This is coming from a doggie lover.

I don't think it serves any one except those that like to see things ripped apart for money. The only times my dogs would attack is if someone were trying to harm me or my family. Kind of a barbaric thing and were supposed to be above that. My answer is illegal with a stiff penalty

It is worse than Cock fighting and I hate that as well.It is not a normal thing to find pleasure in destruction and Blood and Guts.I understand why people sometimes enjoy gambling. So why not go to a Casino. But to enjoy seeing a living breathing thing be torn to pieces is despicable. My Dogs are part of my family and I love them as so.The dogs that are bred to fight are inbred and line bred which is a fr eek of nature.

First of all, I abhor any dog to dog aggression. With that being said, I do not think anyone understands that certain breeds of dogs were BRED for their ability and DESIRE to engage in combat with another dog/animal. You cannot take a dog that does not enjoy this activity and put it in a fight. You need to understand that there are thousands of dollars on the line and people do not want to lose, so they will have the best dog for the job fighting. You CANNOT make a dog fight if it does not want to, you cannot make him do anything if he does not have it genetically. So, what we, as humans look at as cruelty, these dogs LOVE to do. They were born to do it, not trained, although there is training involved to make them better. You cannot condemn a species for doing what comes NATURALLY to them. We do not condemn dogs that hunt or dogs that were bred to go after vermin and kill them or dogs that go after people like police dogs. I have only seen one dog fight, and that was on official capacity and the fight lasted about 40 seconds. As soon as one dog was getting clearly beaten, the owner stopped the fight and that was that. Again, I am not advocating dog fights in any way shape or form and I would never condone them, ever, but, let's stop being so naive and claim that we torture these poor creatures when the truth is, THEY LOVE TO FIGHT.
PS And when did it become ok to go hunting and kill animals just for pleasure or fish and watch a fish struggle for air as it is dying? Those are "acceptable sports" in some people's minds. I think that we as humans, go for what is "cute should not suffer" but what is not, well, whatever........................

Dogs have never naturally fought out of sport, they did fight out of survival, mating, etc. before they were domesticated.
Dogs involved in fights do not seek medical help when they are injured beyond basic first aid, instead they are dumped in alleys to die a slow death. Or they are finished off by their lack of owner who will either choose to beat them to death or shoot them.
If they survive the fate of death they are put back in on heavy weight chains to "condition" them, with open wounds and sores to await the next fight.
Dog fights are proven to lead to other crimes drugs, guns and stolen items are found at homes where dog fighting as occured.
Then you have bait dogs or animals who are subjected to abuse to train the dogs how to fight. These baits animals may have their teeth ripped out of their mouth to they can't fight back, or taped shut, they are starved to weaken them.
It sickens me to think anyone could watch and enjoy animals forced to kill each other. If further sickens me to know the fate of these animals.
