I have filed my taxes through H&R Block online. I got a email saying that my return was accepted yesterday and then a few hours later I got another email saying that my refund will be deposited in my account within 48 hours. Does this sound right? I thought that they did refunds on fridays for direct deposit not on a tuesday or wednesday. Also would the irs accept my refund yesterday as stated? (was it not a holiday for them?)

I received the same email that you did because I filed mine through H&R Block online also and I did not sign up for a loan program. A friend of mine told me that she used this program last year and had her refund in two days just the same. I think it's pretty accurate!

Update: Actually it's not accurate. I called 1888-482-9288 because I became puzzled as to whether or not I asked for a refund loan. They told me that the message was sent in error and you will received your refund 8-15 days from the date you filed. I filed on the 15th so I could receive mine anywhere from January 24-Feb 3. If they do direct deposit, it would be either January 26 or Feb 3.

Returns are normally accepted within a day of transmitting, often less, by the IRS. And even though Monday was a holiday for IRS staffers, their computers were probably still operating so it's very possible your return could have been accepted.

But the IRS deposits refunds just on Fridays. If your email from H&R says you'll have it within 48 hours, sounds like you signed up for one of their high interest/fee refund anticipation loans.

Did you sign up for rapid refund? I have never heard of the IRS being able to turn around a refund in 48 hours. It typically takes them two weeks to process the return and authorize the refund.

A direct deposit can happen any banking day. It is just an electronic transfer of money using the government's ACH system. It just happens that you are probably only used to direct deposits from your own pay day. Your date of submission for your return can be dated any day also, even Sunday, you just won't get a response from the government since the offices were closed.
