My daughter was in a toddler bed at age 2 and then 6 months later we wound up buying a twin size bed for her. It all depends on how you feel about it and if you think your child is ready for the transition. I can say however that I regret spending the money on the toddler bed and not just transitioning my daughter into the twin size bed with side rails.

You should switch to a toddler bed as soon as the child shows signs of trying to climb out. Safety First makes a good rail for the side of the bed so they don't fall out, it has netting so it's not hard if they run into it. You don't want to keep them in any longer because the first time they actually make it out they could get hurt. It's a little more difficult with a toddler bed because, well, you can't keep them in it like a crib. But you can always get a gate for the doorway so you can hear if they are awake but they can't run around the house. Good luck!

My first was 2 1/2, we had another baby on the way, my second at 2, because he could climb out of his crib and my third was almost 3. I did put them in a toddler bed but only because someone gave me one.

I would say about 2 1/2. He needs to understand that he needs to stay in bed and you need to make sure that he won' get up when you are sleeping and get into something dangerous. Don't rush it if he isn't climbing out of the crib. My daughter was doing this so I moved both twins into beds but my son wasnt ready and for two years he kept saying he wanted his crib back!

That depends alot on the child. My oldest two daughters were out of cribs at around a year old because they were climbing out of it. My youngest daughter is now 2 1/2 and still in a crib because she is quite content there.

Keep him in his crib as long as possible. If he ask for a big boy bed think about it, but otherwise i'd keep him in his crib for a while. At least you'll know where he is when you wake up. We switched my daughter over too early. She used to get up at night and wonder around the house. One morning i woke up and there was a melted gallon of ice cream under my kitchen table!lol.

As for the crawling out thing.. If they are crawling out of their crib, they'll crawl out of their bed. And that's when the wondering starts. You can buy a net dome that goes over the crib at babies r us. It'll keep the baby in. It also keeps things out too. like cats and kids! lol. They're wonderful.

At any time the child can climb out of the crib, you need the crib for another baby, or the child is potty training.

My best friend has switched her 3 older children over at 2yrs old because that is when they were able to start crawling out of it and she didn't want them to get hurt.
