firstly, the obvious reason, women are physically weaker than men, its natural for a man to want to protect his partner. dont you want to be protected?
secondly, society puts a lot of pressure on guys to be "the tough ones." a lot of women dont like men who cry. women tend to like men who are big and strong, and who can protect them. a lot of women i talk to say specifically that - "he needs to be big enough to protect me." therefore, in general, it is easier for a man to find a partner or get laid if he acts tough. its what women tend to want. this does put pressure on more sensitive men and makes things hard for them - it prevents them from expressing themselves properly.
from my perspective: i want to protect a woman i care about because i dont want her to get hurt. dont i have the right to keep the person i love safe? and having society pressure me to be tough is a pain in the a*ss and it gets tiresome. but thats just how it is.
hope that helps

Because women are here to bear children and for a mans' children to survive they needed his protection. Its natures way of ensuring survival. The fact that it is less relevant in most western societies does not mean that it does not still have a place in success of the species. If our societies collapsed because of a catastrophic event (like a new ice age) it is what may save your life.

It is a man-thing. That is what we do. In cave-age days we used to drag you around by the hair as trophies and then go out and kill a dinosaur for us to eat. You cooked it. Nothing much has changed and why should it? Or would you prefer to kill the dinosaur whilst your man wears the pinny?

Cause it's cool to be Manno Macho with a chick until a real Man confronts them then there is a funny aroma until they get home and change their clacks

Social conditioning. Although, I've been out with a couple of lasses that were handier then me (and I've done martial arts for 7½ years!). Traditionally women are dainty and blokes are rough

I'm a lover, not a fighter, so I can really get the best of a situation with words. Maybe those guys act that way because of their little bitty wee-wee.
