I would like to maximize the amount of finished space to use for entertaining. My wife believes that if you dont have enough storage space you cannot sell a house easily. So what is the right answer???? 50% storage 50% finished??? Or less?

Depends on the type of storage you will leave. If you are just going to leave open space then you will need to allot more space than if you build decent size shelves then you can reduce the floor space because you have created vertical space. A good idea would also to build a closet for clothing storage.

I'm in my office in the basement now, next room over is a family room with fireplace, then there's a bathroom, a laundry room, a couple kinda crappy but not scary storage spaces, and a spare bedrooms. Really, this place is way too damned big for the two of us. There's plenty of room upstairs. But I like having space for a change.

That depends on the size of your basement. A good rule of thumb is to save storage equivalent to 10% of your living area.
