Focus on dealers that are likely to be offering legal equipment. Also be specific about how the warranty will work if you are not in the specific country. Some of the time a unit purchased in a specific country can not be serviced under warranty back in your home country.

Be aware of the electrical differences and what the unit requires. Getting an adapter or a new cable is not hard. Having a model that needs a transformer is a problem. Not likely that you will run into that problem is you deal with a major brand and a model that is sold in your home country. Just be sure to check.

If the price locally is similar in a number of locations that is a good sign. If one shop has a price that is a lot lower you need to understand what is going on. This could be a sign that you are not getting the real item. Or maybe they just offer a better deal than the rest. It is doubtful any shop that under cuts all the rest can last a long time. Either the others will drop the price or the shop with the low prices is not making enough to stay in business.

One last thing. Be very aware of slight model differences. When I was looking at equipment in Tokyo long ago it was possible that items that were the current model in the US were 1-2 generations behind Tokyo. Mostly electronics at the time. You need to know exactly what model you are getting and what its market price is. Some shops will be clearly out the older models. It might be a great bargain or it might not be at all what you want. Check closely. Check the packaging and the actual item to make sure that what is in the box is what you expected.

Consider the value added (sales) tax situation and if there is a tax rebate for exported items. Be prepared with your passport and the need to file some paperwork. Buy with a credit card if you want the card company to protect you (varies by the country you live in). Also note that you will likely get a cash price and a credit card price with the CC price being higher.

Finally be prepared to have some fun. It is a project and you will need to put in some time over a day or two. Expect to walk out and then see if they can do better the next day. It can be great fun shopping for a major item in a new country.

I can't help you with names of shops, but I live fairly close to Singapore and there are a vast selection of cameras available, but a friend who has just moved here from Hong Kong says they are a lot cheaper there - so you may be better waiting until you're in Hong Kong.

If you intend to use it on your trip, then buy whichever country you arrive first. You need to familiarise yourself with the camera as much as possible.
If you are buying for someone else, then buy whichever country you depart from. This make for lighter luggage plus ensuring you still have money left. Digital cameras have come a long way. They are so common and similarly priced except for high costs European countries and Oceania cities of course..

Singapore, but be careful.. It's the knock off capital of the world.
Go knowing exactly what you are looking for, and with a set price in mind.
Have fun.
