Do you think getting a Chiari MRI scan in a upright position will show more pathology then in a recumbent position if you type in Chiari on this site search engine Their is some Chiari info. http://tinyurl.com/9s5hu

I would think an upright MRI word be more telling than a recumbent in order to observe the relationship between the malformation and the cerebral ventricles. I do agree with the CSF flow study to be done at a teaching hospital, though.

I don't think there is enough data out there on upright MRI's. They are not common enough to know what it really means... If the Chiari malformation looks worse on an upright MRI, this may not necessarily mean anything...

What you do probably want to get if you are worried that you have symptoms related to a Chiari malformation (I assume you mean Chiari type 1), is an MRI with a CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) flow study.

Unfortunately not all places will have either the capability of doing this or the people to interpret it's findings.

Prior to getting a reparative surgery for something like this you should probably see a specialist at a major university center near where you live. If they don't have the capability of doing a CSF flow study, then they probably have no business treating this condition
