i have hypothyroidism too. i am also bipolar so i can get really depressed, i suggest she talk to a psychiatrist about anti-depressants or mood stabilizers.
a good diet that is used by overwieght patients about to undergo surgery is the soup diet. it is very good if prepared right and the actual meal afterwards will taste like the best thing in the world. here is the link -
http://www.cabbage-soup-diet.com/recipe.html
incase you cant get to the link, this is the recipe:
6 large green onions
2 green peppers
1 or 2 cans of tomatoes (diced or whole)
3 Carrots
1 Container (10 oz. or so) Mushrooms
1 bunch of celery
half a head of cabbage
1 package Lipton soup mix
1 or 2 cubes of bouillon (optional)
1 48oz can V8 juice (optional)
Season to taste with salt, pepper, parsley, curry, garlic powder, etc.
Directions:
Slice green onions, put in a pot and start to saute with cooking spray.
Cut green pepper stem end off and cut in half, take the seeds and membrane out. Cut the green-pepper into bite size pieces and add to pot.
Take the outer leafs layers off the cabbage, cut into bite size pieces, add to pot.
Clean carrots, cut into bite size pieces, and add to pot.
Slice mushrooms into thick slices, add to pot.
If you would like a spicy soup, add a small amount of curry or cayenne pepper now.
You can use beef or chicken bouillon cubes for seasonings. These have all the salt and flavors you will need.
Use about 12 cups of water (or 8 cups and the V8 juice), cover and put heat on low. Let soup cook for a long time - two hours works well. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
Day One:
Fruit: Eat all of the fruit you want (except bananas). Eat only your soup and the fruit for the first day. For drinks- unsweetened teas, cranberry juice and water.
Day Two:
Vegetables: Eat until you are stuffed will all fresh, raw or cooked vegetables of your choice. Try to eat leafy green vegetables and stay away from dry beans, peas and corn. Eat all the vegetables you want along with your soup. At dinner, reward yourself with a big baked potato with butter. Do not eat fruit today.
Day Three:
Mix Days One and Two: Eat all the soup, fruits and vegetables you want. No Baked Potato.
Day Four:
Bananas and Skim Milk: Eat as many as eight bananas and drink as many glasses of skim milk as you would like on this day, along with your soup. This day is supposed to lessen your desire for sweets.
Day Five:
Beef And Tomatos: Ten to twenty ounces of beef and up to six fresh tomtoes. Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water this day to wash the uric acid from your body. Eat your soup at least once this day. You may eat broiled or baked chicken instead of beef (but absolutely no skin-on chicken). If you prefer, you can substitute broiled fish for the beef one one of the beef days (but not both).
Day Six:
Beef and Vegetables: Eat to your heart's content of beef and vegetables this day. You can even have 2 or 3 steaks if you like, with leafy green vegetables. No Baked Potato. Eat your soup at least once.
Day Seven:
Brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices and vegetables: Again stuff, stuff, stuff yourself. Be sure to eat your soup at least once this day.
some of the veggies, such as the mushrooms, are optional and since your friend is vegetarian, she can substitute the steak for a few boca burgers or meatless chicken, turkey, etc. anything with lots of protien and low fat content. if she is not already on a medication for her condition, i highly reccomend she talk to her doctor. i am on synthroid (which i think is generic, but im not sure) and it really helps me not be so tired all the time. CURVES also helped me a lot. the music they play is very motivating and the people are very friendly. if shes not into that kind of music, she can listen to her mp3 or ipod.
GOOD LUCK!
p.s. yoga also burns mega calories and requires little movement.

She needs to take some supplements! There are vegetarian/vegan multivitamins on the market that will help her get the nutrients lacking in the typical vegetarian diet. It would also help if she ate more protein-rich foods like beans and nuts, but if she is trying to lose weight she should use nuts sparingly as they can be high in fat. Also, grapefruits can't hurt. Another note: losing more than a pound a week is unhealthy and not recommended. Mostly though, she needs to go to her doctor and talk about these things before starting on any sort of diet or exercise program.

i just lost 50 (male) but i don't know if my methods would work for her. I had no health problems, just work and relationship stress. I got myself into a healthier business environment, and I got dumped by my girlfriend in the process of making that change (she could not wait any longer so she says). Anyhow, I just got serious. 2 miles a day...no excuses. at first, i had to walk a good part of it...and outside, fresh air, sunshine beaming down on me...Vit D I think it is which gets activated by sunlight. Makes you feel a lot better and I knew this from my athlete days. I guess i dont have enough room here, but basically, eat very little, skip meals, no bread, only wine, veggie burgers, a lot of coffee when you go out. no fast food, have a coffee instead. you will train yourself to crave food less. get the intial 15lbs off and she will feel better and have more energy...then at 3o lbs off even more. bottom line, when you get to 50 and can wear new clothes and look in the mirror and see a person you thought you would never see again...there is nothing better...it will bring tears to her eyes. oh, and don't announce that she is doing it, just do it and surprise people when done. less pressure that way. the shock value is fun. good luck to her and you are a saint for helping. my ex told me to lose weight over and over but never suggested anything or helped. she cooked fat food for her cuz she was thin and could handle it, would give it to me too and then lecture me on losing weight. She does need to help herself though too. Something needs to motivate her other than you I am sorry to say. good luck to you/her. oh and i don't go to the gym and even cancelled the membership when i started...i like being outside and a key is to not make it a big production to go workout...just out the door and start running...back in 20mins. quick, no excuses.

Ok to lose 10lbs quickly!! It is hard though!!! You can do "the cleanse" like Beyonce or slim-fast (allows a meal a day). Cleansing allows your body to waste all the build-up but you have to really be dedicated. You make lemonade (instead of sugar you use natural maple syrup grade A) with fresh lemons and drink it for 5 days then you have to take Cayenne with it. You can put the cayenne in the drink or go to the GNC or vitamin shop near you and get 40,000 (or higher)HBU pills and take in the morning or at night. The slim fast diet you are allowed to eat a meal and drink replacement shakes. The shake replaces the meals so when you are hungry drink a shake. I really hope this helps and please be safe.

In the superstore, fruits are usually picked out far too soon. Some are rocks, many are wrong. Some of the fresh vegetables are typical right (zucchini, onions, garlic, lettuce, greens, and a few others) so I'd have to go with vegetables.

Some people use cocaine or laxatives to lose extra weight.
However, cocaine probably isn't legal in your state and can have some side effects. Using laxatives can be pretty messy.

sounds like she needs the motivation to improve her health before she goes on a plan. if she had an objective, a set goal, it might help, for example, getting into skimpy dress or swim suit before the summer.....once she gets motivated, a low fat diet with regular exercise is the tried and true way to go....
