The word etiologic means causative or what caused it. Therefore an etiologic diagnosis is a diagnosis that has an exact cause such as a strept throat. Strept throat is always an etiologic diagnosis because it is always caused by Streptococcus organisms. There are many diagnoses that are given that describe the illness, but don't give an etiology such as hypothyroidism or low levels of circulating thyroid hormone. This is because the cause is either unknown or can be a result of many different disease states. So if your doctor told you the etiologic diagnosis of your disease, then he Knew the cause, but if he said "I can't give you an etiologic diagnosis" , then it means he doesn't know the exact cause, but is giving a diagnosis that describes the problem instead, probably because there are many causes for the problem!
