An academic title is, basically, a professor's rank. So Associate Professor, or full Professor, or Assistant Professor, or Lecturer are all academic titles. An administrative title is a position held, usually by an academic, within the administrative structure of a university. So Prof. Smith, who might be an Associate Professor, might also be serving as the Dean of Arts. "Dean" is his administative title and "Professor" his academic title.
