I've never heard of a school that won't test for dyslexia. The sooner your son is diagnosed, the sooner he can get help and learn how to compensate for this challenge. Your school sounds a bit "backwards" in their teaching abilities and in their recognition of children with additional needs. I would ask your son's Pediatrician.

you should not get your son to take the test and therefore be labelled and have that as an excuse for the rest of his life. Dyslexia is merely a term used to describe people who have a weakness in reading and writing. Just like a weakness in any other skill, it just needs practise using the right tools. You do not mention how old your son is but try things like reading slowly with him, practise spelling words over and over in a 'look, cover, write, check' way. Also check eyesight / glasses and take it slowly. Don't put pressure on just because he is not at the same level as his peers. Daily practise at these kind of things and you will see improvements. Surely that is more productive than the negative labelling you want from a test.

as a parent of a child at that school they have to work with you and if you feel there is a cause for concern they do have to test him.
find out who your home liaison officer is or speak to the parent governors this is your your child's write i didn't get diagnosed with dyslexia until i was 14 by then i had lost all interest in school because i was all ways so far behind.
i now have a good job so even if your son has dyslexia i can be helped

Contact your local doctor about testing. As for labelling, that is not fair, schools are supposed to test for basic learning disabilities and recommend who you should see about further testing.
