My parents and I are going to my Best Friend's Dad's retirement dinner this weekend, and we're coming from out of town. What, if anything should we give to them? Is it appropriate for family friends to give gifts, or just family? Help!

Like an answer said above, unless the invitation said NO GIFTS, do bring a gift. Give a nice card and a pair of movie tickets. Write in the card that the movie tickets are a way to kick-off his retirement!
Inexpensive, yet thoughtful!!

I think that a nice thoughful retirement card will be enough considering that you are coming from out of town and may not have the funds to get a nice gift. Which should be limited to family members only.

Oh, absolutely a must to take a gift with you. It doesn't have to be elaborate; something he's into. If he golfs, cooks, collects then you can take ideas from that. Your best friend can be a good source. If all fails a good history book (about Hamilton or Ben Franklin etc.) is always great for a retiree who'll have a bit more time for reading.
Hope that helps.

It is very appropriate to give a gift, unless the invitations states NO GIFTS. Since it is your Best Friends Dad, you WILL be expected to bring a gift.

Ask your friend or friends mother for a advice. They know him best.

It would be a nice thing. Noting to big. It is the thought that counts. Something small just to show them that you are a good person and show that you care.
