My choice is Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), one of the greatest short story writers ever. Some of the most remarkable ones include "Tell-Tale Heart", "The Fall of the House of the Usher",and "The Murders in the Rue Morgue". Poe is "the pioneer of the modern detective story" (Browning, 1970: 540).
