I want to make a research about American author or anything related to American literature?

Please give me a great author that his work is related to American literature.. Any other that you think is great.. So I could make a research about him and write biographical about him.. American literature etc..

My choice is Edgar Allan Poe (1809-1849), one of the greatest short story writers ever. Some of the most remarkable ones include "Tell-Tale Heart", "The Fall of the House of the Usher",and "The Murders in the Rue Morgue". Poe is "the pioneer of the modern detective story" (Browning, 1970: 540).
